Default 1990 oil cooler removal

i am changing all my cooling hoses on a 1990 L98 including the small ones under the engine going to the oil cooler above the oil filter. i also got a new gasket for between the oil cooler and block (what a joke because it look just like an oil filter gasket but paid alot more at dealer for it)has any body ever replaced this gasket if so do i just twist the cooler off like a filter or what.the car has 105000 miles on it or should i just say the heck with it if its not leaking leave it alone i don't want to screw something up by going too far thank for the help

Ungo the big hex nut on the cooler; that will drop it out so you can replace the seal. The nut is on a threaded sleeve that screws into the original filter mount on block

If it's not leaking I would leave it alone. I think it's very unlikely that it would fail in such a way that you would lose a large quantity of oil.

Exactly as rodj suggests. I had to modify my oil cooler with two additional slots so I could rotate the cooler hoses a bit more towards the block away from Headers

I rotated the oil cooler such that the two long bolts (of the spin on oil filter adapter) fit in the new slots of the oil cooler. I then tightened the big hex nut on the oil cooler

I used new NAPA 8020 and 9808 hoses cut to length replacing the old oil cooler hoses shown which work perfectly.

Do you have any trouble getting your oil filter off ? Looks VERY tight.

Plenty room to remove oil filter....the angle of photo just does not show it

there's a whole series of threads on Fram oil filters, the general gist being, "I'll never buy another".

I am aware of that but had that old Fram PH30 laying around so I stuck it on to keep the dirt out

I may keep that Fram PH30 on for a while after I fire it up to see how header heat effects the oil filter
