Need advise on a GOOD cold air intake
Can anyone recommend a good cold air intake/aircleaner? Presently running a TPiS Airforce 1 and am not satisfied with it,rubs on the hood, poor quality, filter falls out of place, and so on. Are there any good units on the market?
Thanks,
Jim B. :smash:

Is anyone using the SLP or Mid-America Designs cold air systems? are you satisfied with them?

went from stock, to modified stock, to Vortex, to SLP Triple Threat.....
each step was progressively better..... staying with SLP.....

Mike, did the SLP work better than the Vortex? The Vortex pulls through the shroud instead of from the engine compartment. I always ASSumed that pulling from the engine compartment would be hotter, therefore less value. And, yes, I run a K&N w/open lid pulling from the engine compartment now! I was considering the Vortex thinking it would be an improvement. Thanks, Paul

the best open air kit i found was the triple snorkel kit w/ k&n filters combined w/ an air foil, that was on my 96 LT4, but now its blown w/ an ATI huffer.
good luck

Re: Need advise on a GOOD cold air intake (NavyVet)
i am alot more pleased with the SLP than the Vortex. And yes, sitting still and idling i'm sucking in all that engine heat. However, when the wheels are turning there is plenty of fresh air coming in from all over the front of the car which is pushing all of that engine heat towards the back of the engine compartment and away from the air intake. Plus, i think my Greenwood package (in the front) also helps direct alot more air into the engine compartment. I was also finding that the filter on my Vortex was getting dirtier faster. There is alot of dirt, grass, paper, and "crap" getting sucked up through there. I don't care what system you have, a dirty clogged filter will defeat the performance of ANY system.
A few weeks ago I had my car at the dealer for some work and while he had it on the rack I asked him to take a look up and in between the radiators. And sure enough jam-packed up towards the top of the radiator and shroud was the equivalent of 4 or 5 bird nests. I couldn't believe all of the leaves, and grass and paper that he was pulling down. It was the same type of crap that my Vortex was sucking in through the hole in my shroud.
On the road, where "performance" can be felt, my SLP's have 3 2inch tubes sucking in all the air it needs through low restrictive K&N filters.

I am using the one by American Performance. It basically flips the filter over and sucks through a hole you cut in the shroud. Looks almost stock and uses the stock filter cover so you can use regular filter size.
Easy install and good fit. Mid America had it in the catalog, but discontinued it. TPIS sells it.
No danger of sucking in water. It reduced the IAT by 20-30 degrees in the summer to a few degrees over ambient.
The only thing lacking is a reasonable price.
