New Mini Protorque Starter DOESNT match up!!!
I installed Long Tube Headers this weekend on my '87, and desided to go with a Summit Protorque Mini Starter to make my life easier! Well, it didn't turn out that way. I got ready to fire up the engine, and all I could hear was the starter spinning. I took a look under there, and sure enough there is abouta 1/4th inch gap between the starter teeth and the flywheel teeth...
WTF do I do now?
The stater part number is SUM-820323
Is it possible, I installed it upside down? I kind of fit it up both ways and only seemed to bolt up good one way...

The mounting block is adjustable to fit either type of flywheel. Did the instructions show which holes to use for a 153 or 168 tooth flywheel??
You may also have to use the shims to get the final gear mesh right.
Did you have to replace the stock battery cable to get it to bolt up, or is the 87 cable long enough for this starter??

This is a horizontal gap problem, shims will not help here.
I am not sure how many teeth my flywheel has, I just bought the car in august and everything appeared to be stock.
The instructions were not very good that came with the starter.
And the way I have it mounted now, the stock cables fit! I hope it stays that way haha.

I had this starter with TPIS headers, and ended up returning it to Summit specifically because of the routing location of the electrical connections. Keep those cables clear of the headers and cover them, or you'll have lots of problems with this starter. The GMPP one is a nice unit and has its electrical connections in closer proximity to where the stock starter had which might make your routing easier.

Well guys, I tried a few different configurations... i finally got fed up and put the original starter back on. Wasn't sure if I could get it crammed in there without taking the header all theway out, but I did!
Open headers sound so nice
Anyway, you think summit will take the return and pay for shipping??

Summit might take it back if it's in all original packaging, but I doubt they will pay for shipping. I think you may have the wrong starter for that app. I installed a mini on my 85 the other day and it works better than stock, in my opinion, plus it takes up less space.

With $20 shipping on Ebay it would be cheaper to go to Autozone. Buy the starter and pay the core fee. Return the old starter later to get your core. I really don't think the guy at the counter earning minimum wage is gonna be able to tell the difference between the two starters.
