Default Doug Nash 2nd Gear grind

I was looking at an 85 today with a Doug Nash 4+3. All gears shift fine except 2nd. 2nd gear grinds when I tried to shift from 1st. I did not want to force it so I went to 3rd from 1st. Any suggestions what this might be? An easy adjustment or an expensive fix? Thanks

In any manual transmission, that is a sign of a worn syncromesh blocking ring. Depending on how long it has been going on, it could also have damaged second gear and the associated selector collar.

The parts aren't that expensive but the transmission does have to be torn down to replace them.

I agree, defective 2nd gear blocker ring.

Would this also be the case on a 6sp grind from 1st to 2nd?

Yes, it likely needs brass, but you need to see to the basics first. Check your clutch fluid and ensure that the clutch system is properly bled. If the problem is that the clutch is not fully releasing, fixing it, might allow you to limp with the transmission as it is for awhile.

Good luck,
Doc

The good thing is you can usually get a perfectly fine 4+3 used for 350-500$ plus shipping, which may be less than a rebuild depending on who does it and what. Just factor that into the car price. Then you can also upgrade to the stronger 86-88 version.

This could be, as others said, issues with the clutch hydraulics as well.
