Re: Dana 36 to 44 swap (danno85)
I just did this about 1 month ago. It is pretty much a basic swap out except you have to change the driveshaft yoke from the M6 shaft to the A4 shaft. The A4 shaft has a big balancer on it and the yoke splines are different.
Others have used the 36 torque tube (C-beam) by elongating the holes, but I bought the whole thing as a kit from a salvage yard so I didn't need to go that route. You have to remove the rear tranny end cover to access the two plastic gears to swap out for speedo calibration for pre 94 cars. Also the VSS had to be changed. I got this stuff from Jeff Kopp for about $35 shipped I think. I changed the ujoints while in there and drilled out the bottom carrier bolt hole so that I can do fluid changes without the sucker thing. I replaced the diff carrier bushings with poly units. If you want to upgrade your rear stabilizer bar, it would be a good time. Just make sure you put it back the right way (not upside down). It fits, just trust me. :conehead . I did it in my garage in a few days time working slowly and alone. No real hurry for me. I left the rear pretty much together when I dropped it out.
Remove exhaust, spare tire carrier and remove the two forward c beam bolts, loosen upper shock bolts, swaybar bolts, brakes, ebrake cable, dog bones at the frame point not the hub. Used a floor jack for both exhaust removal and diff removal.

Mine was $2100 with new 4.09 R&P, posi, case, bearings. Everything else was used but reconditioned and in like new shape. For all I got it was a good deal.
