I printed out the fast guy method and attempted to remove the heater core today. 10 minutes into it, i was sweating more than i do after 2 hours at the gym.
2 questions, #1) Do i have to remove the breadbox. #2) do i have to remove the (i dont know what its called), carpetted passenger knee bolster area?

I dunno but I would remove the knee bolster just for more access. Got a link to the instructions you are using?

Here is a pic of the housing cover so you have an idea where the top 2 bolt holes are. Re and re-ing those 2, is the toughest part of the job. The rest is pretty easy.

Thanks agent 86 for the pics. I Reinstalled the old carpetting, going to wait for the fall for the repair job. If I take the top of the dash off, the dash pad i guess you could call it, would it be easier to access those 2 screws on top of the heater core case.

Not really they will be tucked up where you can't get to them with it on or off.

Just did mine on my daughters 84 a couple of weeks ago. The fast method does work. I was able to get to the top left bolt with a 1/4 inch ratchet and an extension. Took the seat out for easier access and the whole job only took about 4 hours. Did not have to take the dash or dash cap out!!!!

I took the whole car apart to replace the heater core on my 88 back in 2002 . Took me a full week to be able to walk straight again:o

This method works on earlier cars much better than Lt1's. More crap stuck up under there. I need to do mine and will start off trying this way but bet it will have to be modified. I always like finding a easier way and have never seen a proper reinstall of a GM dash yet after it has been removed even by the dealers.

yea im going to go this rought too, the P.O of my 85 bypassed the heater core cause he said it was fogging the winshield, so i guess that will be my fall project

I tried to remove the carpeted portion of the lower dash when I was replacing my heater core. I was only successful at wasting time. With the dash pad off and the knowledge that it just doesn't get any better than that, take the seat out and cover the studs on the floor. Put some light on the subject and get some band-aids ready. Make sure you have a 7mm socket and some vaseline to hold the screws in the socket when you go to replace them. You will be doing things blindly and in difficult positions. Keep your cool.

When I did my heater core I used a small piece of blue painters tape for the top screws along with a 1/4" flex extention. I put the screw through the tape, then put the screw into the holes (like a washer with the sticky part of the tape towards the shroud).

When I did my 94 I looked for shortcuts but ended up just removing everything and documenting where it came from. Putting it back together wasn't bad at all and i was VERY glad I didn't waste much time trying to do it the "easy way".

I have pictures though. It was a mess and when disassembled I did wonder if I would be able to get it back together. That said if I can do it "the hard way" then anyone can.
