It's your car so do what you want

There are many low rise manifolds available with drop air cleaners that will fit under there.

It's not what you think. Purist hold your ears, but this in going in my Cheetah, Currently have an 88 TPI motor in there, and it fits under the hood with an inch to spare. Bolted a Performer on there today and it looks like I won't have to cut thu the hood. Now I need a low rise manifold for the Big block, in the other one I'm building. thanks

Yes you can, I have an 86 with a Edelbrock performer dual plane intake and a 780 Holley, you will have to run a low profile air cleaner, but Ill tell you what, It was the best thing I ever did, I wont even get into all the pluses, except 1 just for starters. (dependability)

I have the same manifold(airgap), although the 780 is overkill for a small block, I cut my hood though.

you can use the weiand stealth, or X-cellerator, and a low profile air cleaner.

I have a regular HEI distributor for my carb conversion, is the gear compatable with the roller cam?

You don't need a mech pump. Use the stock electric one with a bypass regulator.
