Default heating of the back window of an 1985

I have not a climate control but a manual control unit. I have to adjust the heat and blow.
When I put on the heater of the window the little light in the switch come on for only some seconds and goes off and the heating as well.
What can be the problem. When switching it on again the light and heat does not come on.
Do anybody have any idea what it can be.
the heater works when getting power

are you talking about the rear defroster, if so, check the wire connections on the rear hatch struts. you say that it has power, but are you sure the heating elment has continuity? I have an 85 and my defroster is out too, but it is just the connector that broke many years ago, I have been too lazy to put it back together.

The rear window defroster is on a timer, It will only stay on for a set time then it turns it self off.

The rear defroster uses alot of power. That is why it has a timer on it.

Thanks for the answers.
I am quite sure the defroster itself is ok because the time it stand ON all the wires are heated ( can see the dew dissappear around the wires)but it shuts itself off after just some seconds and cannot be reset immediately but after some minutes, and that is a change of how it was before. Then it stood in on position with the light for at least a minute or two and when it cut off I could reset it immediately for a new heating session.
Do you know where the timer is? Is it electronic or just a controled relay?
HAs anybody else had the same symptom.
Is the timer in the heater/AC control panel in the front of the consoll
