I purchased a similar kit from Eckler's a few years ago to fit a later top to my 88, but I didn't see it listed there.

What about fitting an 84-88 top to an 89-96??

Find somebody that's going the other way and swap the hardware, if its compatible with the top. I think 84 is unique, 85-86 early and 86 late to 88 have some differences in the mounts

I still have my original 88-style brackets and trim pieces, but I want to hang on to them, just in case.

I'm thinking there are 3 patterns for tops. 84-86E, 86L-88, 89-96.

So..can I just swap out the hardware pieces from my 93 top to the 88 top?

No. It is not a simple as swapping the small brackets on the top itself.

The windshield header trim and the brackets that locate the front mouning bolts (underneath the header trim) on the car must be swapped to be compatible with the top.
