Default severe Grinding noise from rear end

I have developed a metallic noise in my 89 ,seeming to be coming from the drivers side rear. Its a loud mettallic sharp "crack"sound, like something is "binding"then releasing. It occurs both forward and while reversing, and is intermittant,ie may "crack" twice at 1-10 mph, and then once at around 20mph and appears to disappear(not audible) above 30mph.It does not occur more often if under acceleration.I have removed rear wheels and inspected caliper etc,but no visible signs of anything wrong or rubbing.

Does it make this noise when you turn???
If so, your limited slip could be the culprit...
Hope not...

Seems to be the same, either straight line or turning.THE U joint's may be the fault as previously suggested..82,000 miles on them.

My 86 was making the same sound. It was a bad U joint on one of the half shafts. I also had a pinion seal leak. I am in the process of replacing the seal and putting in all 6 U joints. My car just turned over 100K. I figured I might as well do them all with my mileage.

I agree with these guys on the U joint theory.....mine did make that same noise in the past...pulled the joints and found only 3 roller/needle bearings still in one piece the rest were pulverised to dust/rust....the car slowly developed a high speed vibration over 65mph.....installed new U joints and all was well once again.
