My daul mass flywheel, neutral balanced and resurfaced

A friend of mine pretty much has a machine shop in his personal garage. We put it in a lathe and machined off the counter weight. Then we flipped it over and run set screws into the threaded holes where the pressure plate bolts. We used the set screws to true up the front of the flywheel so there was no movement. There was absolutely no run out between the 2 half's. We shaved off between .008 to .010. The shiny spots that you see on the face are where the flywheel had gotten a little hot and hardened the cast, but it should be fine. If it works then we might be willing to do some on the side if anyone is interested. It took a lot of set up, plus we had to bolt it to an old crank to get it running true in the lathe.

have you put the FW on a balancer? I mean, just because you remove a mass of metal doesn't mean it's now balanced.
the machining looks good. how many miles on the unit?

We are going to use an old crank, make it neutral, then stick the flywheel on and then go from there. I will let everyone know how close it is.
This flywheel has 49,000 miles on it. If I get another 50,000 out of it I will be happy. Since my car is only driven on the weekends, to shows, etc..

I don't see how removing .008-.010 from one of these things can make much of a difference. I know there are guys on this forum that have done it and not had any problems, but there are some that have problems. From what I have read, it is clutch chatter and that is a sign of a poor resurface job, where the 2 halves were not secured.

I spent most of last night in a friends machine shop neutral balancing my dual mass flywheel and harmonic balancer. I used an old 4.3 crank, cut the counter weights off and made it neutral first. Then I put on the balancer and the flywheel. I bought a new balancer hub from Jegs that has a keyway in it.
Anyway, the balancer was out 5 grams and the flywheel was out 24 grams. Got them both down to about .5 grams.
