It's Too Loud...
I've been searching the forum alot tonight regarding exhaust sounds. My system is just too darn loud...too loud at idle, too loud at cruise, and too loud at WOT. I have TPIS ceramic coated long tube header, into their Y pipe, into gutted CAT, into TPIS back Y pipe, and finally into the TPIS version Flowmasters. I need to to make a change to quiet this thing down. Yes, it is a deep muscle car sound that many would like...it's not the sound I prefer. I am looking for a more modern sound (if that makes any sense). Perhaps a bit higher pitch (don't laugh) and definately not as loud.
So, what can I do...just change mufflers? Which mufflers would give me the sound I desire?
Car is a 1985, has heads and roller cam, 230 duration, 550 lift.

Jansen, all kidding aside (had to do it, most of us mod our cars for speed, the sound falls where it may), if you added back a high-flow main cat that in itself will cut the noise down by 20-30%. i went the exact route you did (no pre-cats due to long tubes, gutted/test-piped main cat) and the difference between cat vs. catless really surprised me. it'll still be somewhat loud, mainly only when you get on it, and you won't be tripping off car alarms everywhere you go....which i agree is pretty ludicrous for a daily driver and typically attractive to kids dying for attention.
is that cam 230 @ .050, or advertised duration?

The volume went up more than I expected when my cat died & I tried a test tube. Get a stock or high flow cat first, then if it's still too loud, you can try other mufflers.
Prob. find people in the for sale section who might be willing to trade for your TPIS catback.

Yes, 230 at .50 both intake and exhaust.

I was running this for awhile and if this was a daily driver I would go back to it. Long tubes, no cats and tied to the Stock system. It has a deeper tone, is slightly louder then stock, and I have not seen any difference in power. (based on track times)
The stock system is dirt cheap used, heck sometimes its free!! And the build quality is first rate. IMO you will not find anything built better. The only problem with it is, its too quiet for alot of people.

Even if you put a high flow CAT back in it will still be pretty loud with the Flowmasters. They are pretty loud. If you want to stay with performance mufflers go with Magnaflows. Check Mid America and Corvette Central.
I am running a Magnaflow cat and catback with no front cats. Very little resonance above 1500 rpm and reasonable sound level.

Or at least start there. I have a 94 LT1 6 speed. I bought it with no cats on it with stock manifolds and exhaust. Installed a set of Hooker shorties and a Corsa cat back. WAY TOO LOUD!!! It sounded cool at idle and when showing off, but on a date or just cruising it was awful. I put the cats back in, noticed slight increase in bottom end torque (sotp) and a much mellower tone. Your stock 85 has the single central convertor if I remember right. I would start by installing a set of high flow cats (assuming you'll have 2 with the long tubes).
