Default Code 24 VSS

Finally found what a Code 24 was on 1987 Coupe. What part(s) needs to be replaced and where might this part be hidden at?

Man I sure will be glad when Helm ships my manual. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Just got the Code 34 cleared today, take it on one test drive (sunny day had to spin the tires a little) and now Code 24.

Is you speedometer still working? VSS is the Vehicle Speed Sensor and its located on the tailshaft of the trans on the driver side (at least on the 700r4). I had this code in my car a few years back and it turned out the shaft in the VSS had snapped. If this was the case your speedo would not be working.

Thanks for the chart Agent, and TA the dash cluster is out being rebuilt so I do not know if the speedometer is working or not.

Started the vehicle while working on gear selection indicator and no SES light while wheels were not turning.

Expect the dash cluster back this week but it has to have the tachometer replaced before it can go back in.

Thanks again for all replies.

You prob have the code24 because your cluster is not installed and your driving the car... I expect from looking at the diags , the cluster makes the circuit... i'd install the cluster, clear the codes, and try again...

I got a Code 24 on my 88 and it came on when the wheels were not moving. I had been having trouble with a short in my speedo so I put a micro switch in line with the power wire that ran to the fuse box. The wire came loose and the instrument panel went blank. I hooked the wire back up and the Code 24 went away. Fix your instrument panel and have the VSS checked out if you still get a code 24 with the wheels moving and it will more than likely be the VSS. Unfortunately I sold my 88 last night and now have my eyes on an original 71 that has been sitting in a barn for about the past 15 years. Good luck.
