LS1 in a C4??

Re: LS1 in a C4?? (M.D.A.2)
I was reading a posting on putting an LT5 in a C5 (the opposite of what you are considering). The gist of the discussion was that the mounting points on the two engines were different enough that it caused major problems. The bell housing was significantly different (LS1 is not directly connected to the transmission). A competent machinist should be able to overcome the obstacles (read $$$). LTx engines are still fairly plentiful and there are a bunch of mod proved to increase HP.
Although, the LS1 is infinitely more practical in a C4 than an LT5 in a C5. Why does this interest you?

Just to be diffrent. I can see how there could be a problem if you used a Vette LS1, but one out of a F-body should be an easier fit. I could be totally wrong. Considering the F-bodies still use the same 4L60E trans, there shouldn't be that much of an issue.

Re: LS1 in a C4?? (M.D.A.2)
Whether the LS1 comes out of the f-body or a Vette would make no difference, other than the drive-by-wire deal. The 4L60E should be the same as yours, although the T56 for the LS1 uses a different input shaft than the LT1 T56. I seriously doubt that it would be easy to adapt the ZF to work. If you were to get an LS1/T56 combo, I would imagine that the most difficult part would be the custom motor mounts, and any potential clearance issues for the accessories. You might luck out and find that the corvette exhaust manifolds fit your C4, but in all liklihood you would need custom made headers. The T56 install could invite a whole host of problems, but none that couldn't be overcome. I don't think this would be an extremely difficult swap, but I'm sure it would be time consuming and a lot more expensive than just throwing a supercharger onto your LT1/L98.

For the price of the LS1 and all the labor involved to get it to fit you could afford a TOP OF THE LINE 396 LT1 from any tuner that would put that stock LS1 to shame.

Buddy of mine is buttoning up the finishing touches of doing exactly that. Not only a C4, but an 84 Crossfire C4!!! He is corking on adapting the wiring harness to keep the stock C4 dash.
It is not for the faint of heart. This was a LOT of custom machining, fabrication, electrical, etc. This is also about 8 months in the making.
BTW, if you have to ask how much it is going to cost, this projects is probably not for you. ;)

The oil pan in the LS1 is compleatly differant.. this is a BIG job.. I would recommend a Super Charger for your LT1 instead.. they are terrific engines :D

Re: LS1 in a C4?? (-=Jeff=-)
Tracer X has been working on this. It has been running. Have not seen the car in a couple of months. There were some pics of it here, but I don't know if you can still find them. Tracer may be posting on the LS1 forum too.

LS1C4 is up and running! Sean Gustin just hooked up the last of the wiring to the motor and we took her out for a spin. The car feels awesome! The 4L60e is pulling strong all the way up to the 6500 rpm shift points. Next is to finish the GM perf parts guage cluster.

LT5 in a C5? I didn't think a C5's engine bay has enough room for an OHC engine.
Then again, I've seen pictures of an LT1 in an old VW Bug.

Re: LS1 in a C4?? (88L98)
I think Trace is using the LS-1 out of a Camaro, so the tranny is probably a Camaro unit too, but I am not sure. Hope to see it out at the AutoCross next week in Houston

I am using the Camaro motor and tranny out of a 98 model. Anyone doing this sort of swap would certainly be better off using the F-bod driveline.
ChrisB : Sean and I found the cast iron pistons and will be ready for the races soon. If you know of any head and cam LT1's, I am looking for a light snack(very light)
