Me and the guy at the local Vette Shoppe were talking yesterday and i had told him i was looking at upgrading to Z06 or C5 brakes and after discussing it for a while i told him that i would be designing the adapters and CNC machining them either from aluminum or steel and he told me that he would trade me calipers and rotors for a few sets of the adapters. So now i am wondering if there is anyone else interested in this conversion since we are going to have the CNC fired up we could make a few extra. This would be for 91 style hub. let me know if any of you guys are interested

There should be a lot of interest, if the price is right. I would hae gone that route but the brackets were too expensive.

well Iam interested..but was not aware that I needed brackets?...I have a 1990....and thought the kit....for like $900 comes with everything....are they misleading?....I found it in Mid America I believe...

how much are the brackets and what do they do?

I would be interested in just the brackets if they are of a high quality CNC steel.

You can buy a complete C5 brake upgrade kit from Zip. It is complete with the brackets and bolts, calipers, pads, lines, and gas vaned rotors. However you will not be able to run you stock wheels with C5 calipers. Unless you already have the A-mold wheels you will have to buy them or aftermarket wheels that will clear. Or you can use a 3/4 spacer behind a stock 17" wheel. There is no hope for the 85-7 guys though, it will not fit a 16" wheel, you will have to upgrade to the 17" wheels in order to use this kit.

the kit includes brackets rotors and calipers,
what i am doing is buying calipers.......about 120-150 ea. total 240-300
Rotors............about 80-90ea total 160-180
and making the brackets........a few hours of design and production

Total about 480 max

actually the guy is going to trade calipers for a set or two of adapters

also we need to work out the design whether its going to be 1 or 2 piece and aluminum or steel

The new calipers you are pricing, from the price does not look they are coming with the cast iron caliper mount brackets. You will have to have those also.

well the calipers are off of a wrecked car, the Vette Shoppe has a few sets so they are not new but i couldn't tell

There's an article in CF Nov., 2001 on this upgrade using a package from Vette Brakes & Products. It comes with all needed materials, including brackets; P/N 22500 fits '85-'87; P/N 22501 fits '88-'96 C4s.

This setup is lauded as the best brake upgrade for C4s since the '88 year. I'm saving the article for when my baby needs new binders.

yeah, but i am not really into paying full price for something that i can make myself or with a little help and get the same thing, possibly better since they will be inspected my me and i have been called by many **** retentive about my car. Especially since i don't have to buy new calipers thats pretty big saving in itself.

Let me tell you what you are paying for from VB. There stuff is also heat treated. They have independent labratories do test's on there stuff and also SCCA race teams, I don't think you get better than that.

I hear you on those issues. I've "engineered" a few mods for the same reasons. And, cost aside, too often you do NOT get what you pay for. Anyway sounds like a good way for you to go on this one and some of the Forum menbers can likely benefit from your labors.

Personally, when I do brakes on my vehicle I do all components at each axle. That way they're like new, assuming the wheel bearings are fine too. Plus I'm usually working on a system with about 100k miles and lotta years on the clock.

If we use steel we can heat treat them too. He builds mold that have to withstand thousands of pounds of pressure and be built within thousandths of an inch clearances. so i think i can trust his workman ship

The other thing is all too often they develop this great thing for SCCA and such then build a mold and cast the parts from there, leaving serious weak spots and such. I honestly would rather go with something i was there to see that it was done right IMHO, as for the ussed brakes....how many miles would a wrecked Z06 have on it anyway?

Correct me if I'm wrong but weren't the C5 rotors experiencing warping under track conditions?

i don't think so, they are far larger than the C4 and even ZR-1 brakes. I guess it could be thought my friend warped his rotors on his TA braking hard from 152

Yes the C5 rotors were warping, the stock one anyways. 91 Ordinary I understand what you are saying, and most of the time you are probably correct. However I have seen this kit and it is on the money. The next step above these brakes is in the $2500 range.

If you guys are interested I can get brand new GM calipers for $86.90 each, rotors for $51.70 each, and the cast iron oem brackets for $26.24 each. Could probably afford to take a few more bucks off the calipers and rotors if one was to order a full set. -Jeff

Just another thought for you guys. If any of you do any NCCC racing you will be bumping yourself into Group III Race Prepared Altered Frame catagory. This means that you need a full roll cage in the car, as well as various other safety equipment, fire suit, harness etc.... Just might want to consider that . I have talked to guys that have done this mod and they love it. But they arn't legal for Group I or II or even III any more.

For mostly the same reasons i want cross drilled and slotted rotor is for looks, my car hardly ever get raced and most of the time its low speed autocross or dragracing. Not really a big concern to me
