I think GM recommends you replace the timing chain at 100k miles. Because I had to do other repairs on the front of the engine at 144k miles, we replaced the timing chain. The timing chain cover, water pump, and crank damper and crank pully has to be pulled to replace the timing chain.

Just changed the water pump and opti and I didn't think of the timing chain till after the fact. I only have 72K on my 92 so I guess all is well. Thanks again for the info.

I'm comming up on 170,000 on my '95 and I haven't replace the timing belt yet. And yes, I KNOW it's only a matter of time before it happens. But it's a testament to the reliability of the part that it hasn't happened yet.

The problem is rarely a timing chain failure, but rather as the chain stretches, the loose tolerances allow the camshaft to retard and you lose torque.

That said, replacement is a real PITA... even worse if you have an optispark... I'd just leave it alone until you do a major refresh, camchange or some other major service.
