Sometimes. The PCMCIA cardbus-serial adaptor would be a better way to go. I tried it on mine and it just wouldnt go with an RS232-USB adaptor.

Getting these programs to run is tough enough. In my opinion the last thing you need is another challenge with this project. I have heard of some successes but not many. Most of thest programs are designed for serial port operation. Most get a old cheep computer for this application seems like the best thing to do.

Don't do it, the Serial-USB adaptors suck for ALDL comms..
If you only have USB, buy the moates ALUD1, see here http://www.moates.net/datalog-reflash-c-49.html

I bought one from Radioshack to use with my FAST system. The first two times I tried to use it, my computer lost the setup info. After reinstalling it the last time I haven't had any more problems. I read somewhere that not all brands would work with everything. Maybe that has something to do with everyone else having problems. I also use it with the power commander on my bike with no trouble.

I have a Belkin USB/Serial adaptor that I use with both my Sharp laptop and IBM X31. Knock on wood, never had any problems with both Autotap and LT1-Edit.

Buy one from the same place you buy the ALDL cable from. They will know what works with their stuff.

The Belkin is the only one I have heard works but not all the time.Get a cheap laptop with a serial port on it if you want to make it work right.

Wow, I'm really suprised to hear of all of these problems. I use USB->Serial adapters all the time, both at work and for tuning cars with both the FAST XFI and Big Stuff Gen3 systems...at work I use them for connections to some of my Cisco routers. I also have the USB version of AUtoTap and that also works great. I buy the generic ones from Radio Shack, and my laptop is installed with XP Profesisonal.
