Default does your built 700r4 make noise at all?

so i have a fully built 700r4 and i have not had lockup for over a year now...i have a huge cooler tho so it should be ok intell i find out why im not gettin lokcup.....anyways my question is does your tranny make wining noises like a blower/gear drive..ect not when im in P or N but when i put her into D she sure starts to wine ....is this because of the 3-4 clutch packs, bigger servo ect? anyways just wanted to know if this is normal on a built 700r4 or should i be lookin into it more? i think it sounds good but not sure if it is good!!

ok this is what the trans has in it..update 3/4clutch pack...wide 700r4band..forward sprag...low-reverse sprag-wide...HD sun gear shell..large servo kit..throttle valve -boost valve..HD shidt kit....this was all put in when i got it built...then i put a b&m 2200-holeshot lockup in it...i have looked back the paper work from summit and it is a lockup tc. so with that said anyone else have input?

I have a built tranny with a full race shift kit in my car...it does not whine...as for the lock up not working, you may want to check the brake switch...when I had a 3200 stall put in last fall it would not lock up...fixed the brake switch and voila!...works great now...

A well-built Tranny no matter what it has in it should not whine IMO.
The one in my '85 didn't ...

Mine is built like yours and it doesn't whine. Have you considered manual lock up?

ouch.

do you have a lock up converter that isn't locking, or a non lock up converter in a lock up 700? what year is the tranny from?

If it's whining you need to have it checked. I've been through 4 700R4's

The lockup seems to be an issue. or atleast it was with my car. If there is no lockup and it's whining, it is most likely low pressure.

How long has it been whinning? I ask because right before all my trannys went south the tranny started the whine just like you said.

In short no it shouldn't whine, and if you don't have it looked at then their is a good chance it will fail soon.

mine is "built" also much like yours
mine does not whine
with a big cooler it could be keeping your trany cool enough that the temp switch in the trany wont close (i doubt this is the prob) (the switch is in series with the convertor lockup circut)
but it sounds like there might be a converter problem

I've got an beefed 88 in my 32. No whine. How do you know it hasn't been locking up. I drop about 200 rpm's when it does and it's tough to feel or catch on the tach. If your correct I'd guess converter......Frank

the trans has made this noise for a while now...more then a year. the trans is out of a 91 c/k1500 p/u and its in my 92 fullsize p/u...i know im not gettin lockup because i have done a test that jimsperformance.com told me to do..... At the white plug at tranny probe the purple wire and see if you have pwer there with key ON..."i have power" Then if you do, plug it back in and then splice a 6 ft wire into the tan and run the test wire up into truck so you can drive down the road. After you get in to 4 th gear at about 60 mph touch the test wire to Ground. You will feel lock up if tcc solenoid in tranny is good"i dont feel anythin, and i have done this twice"..If this works then you probrobly have a bad 4th gear pressure switch on valve body or the wrong one which can cause this..Not having lock up wont hurt the tranny as long as you have a good tranny cooler.jim
i have talked to other people about this also and they said since im runnin a "730" ecm in my truck and a truck vss im not gettin the right singnal to make lockup....somthin about one bein a 2pulse and one a 4 pulse? just not sure were to start or how to go about this...from what all of you have said it sounds like this is because of the TC...i know its a lockup because i look at the paper work from it.

No noise in my built T700 ,I have the clutch deleted from the convertor.
This kit on eBay (item # 8067665110 ) for $25 sense vac to lockup in 4th gear.
Low vac at idle would not be a problem

No whine in mine either; aprox 2 - 3000kms (aprox 1200 - 1800 miles) since rebuild. Lockup works fine.

Sounds like a bad thrust bearing to me based on what you've described, sorry to say...

Whining is bad. They are prone to a slight buzzing sound, but no whining. If it happened immediately after the rebuild, it could have been set up too tight. There is a selective endplay washer under the reverse input drum torrington bearing. .015 is minimum end play. Drum and guts need room to grow when hot. No lock up makes it run hotter. If the builder followed the old spec(gm changed it about 1986 or so) of .005, it could explain it. The tighest I have run them is .013. Loosest is .028. I always aim for .022.
