Default 89 rear 'bangs' under moderate throttle

Our '89 six-speed has a rubbing sound (whish, whish) coming from the left rear that is audible if you are near a high curb or jersey barrier. It recently started a 'bang, bang, bang' if moderate throttle is used, generally on a slight turn (noticed it from a left turn lane I was starting from).

Under the car, all seems tight, no real play in half-shafts. Is this likely U-joints, or possibly something else?

It could be wheel bearing hub assembly. Jack up rear of car ,pull and push on outer edge of tire. There should not be mutch movement.

There are 6 u-joints; 1 at each end of each half-shaft, 1 at each end of the drive shaft. Check them all.
