When are you going to do this?
I am planning to do this by the end of this month with the timing chain also. Accordint to Lars tech. paper, it took him 4 hrs. I think it will take me 40 hrs

I did this job a few months ago. Not too bad at all. Just have to remove most of the front of the motor.

1. The A/C needs to be disconnected and put to the side.
2. A/C bracket has to come out.
3. Alternator needs to come out.
4. Smog pump and Power steering needs to be loosen.
5. Crank pulley can stay on.

Took me about 5 hours to do this job by myself. I also spent alot of time on cleaning the gasket surfaces.

I used a Edelbrok hiflow water pump. About $150 from Summit Racing.

are you an L98 water pump virgin?
i was....and it took me 10 hours....started on july 4th, finished on july7th
OMG the hardest part for me was moving the AC compressor off of the bolts on the driver side of the motor to remove the water pump!
while you got it off....replace ALL the hoses....lower radiator and heater hose.
also i found it easier to clamp the hoses on the water pump and then put the pump back in....a little easier on the back!

great......if i would have loosened all that stuff, it may have gone a little smoother. however, the Hayes manual i have walked me through it STEP by STEP and i was quite impressed with the details......i did not take the alternator out, and did not loosen anything on the driver side of the car you do have to move the AC drier canister otherwise you cannot pull the compressor far enough forward to get it off the bolts

i also did some research on hi flow pumps.....WHAT WAS THE WARRANTY ON THAT EDELBROCK? flow-kooler has a lifetime warranty on theirs!
just food for thought?! and i think its about $120 from flow kooler ...you can order from their website http://www.flowkooler.com

From my experience working on cars, it is sometimes better to loosen/take off additional parts because it will make the whole job easier.

The AC compress is held in by 4 10mm bolts, get them from the side of the car. I took off the piece of plastic that covers the passenger wheel well. This is the easy part, the AC bracket is more difficult. Take a look at it , you will see a coolant hose going through the AC bracket.

I never did check on the Edelbrok water pump warrenty. If it lasts only 30K miles, that will get me through the next 7 years.

Mine was done two years ago. It wasn't too bad. Follow everything mentioned above and you'll be fine.

Remember I mentioned an a/c vibration? No more! I had the cracked a/c bracket replaced with the body colored one(looks nice) and it's fine now.

wow....i put 22K on mine since november....hope it lasts more than 30K :crazy:
not that i was knocking your method....i just didn't see the relevance of taking things off of that side....all my trouble was with the AC compressor and drier. you are probably right though....not that its very hard to remove the alternator or anything! i learned a valuable lesson for next time and now if a friend needs help.....i am experienced. :D

Put in a Stewart over the winter. Very happy with pump. I use a small notebook and made notes and put bolts and parts in zip lock bags and marked them. Made re-assembly a lot easier since, at least on the 90, there is a LOT of crap to take off to get to the water pump.

I did mine a while back too. It was more than I bargained for! Prepare yourself. Definitely follow vettenuts advice about labeling nuts and bolts. Take a picture or two for reference, draw a diagram, make notes. Load the ice chest w/ some good stuff and calmly take it one step at a time. I am really happy I did it myself. It's like you become closer with your car. That feeling of accomplishment and a job well done. Good luck and let us know what happens. :chevy

Scorp, good advice on replacing the hoses. I'm impressed with the 5 hour turnaround! *Many* layers of the onion to remove before you get to the pump. I started to clean stuff and replace things in a "while you can get to it" mode. Make sure you get the block real clean and dry before you re-install the new pump. Also, use the GM approved teflon thread sealent. It should also help keep the two bolts on the odd firing side of the engine from backing out. I found that I really didn't need a new pump, but just a couple of ft. lbs. of torque on those two bolts!
BTW, definitely remove the plastic inspection panel on the the pass side, and use an air ratchet on the four *looong* AC bolts. Also, there's one locknut on the inside of the AC bracket that is a tricky one to spot, and easy to drop. (In a tight location)

just finished mine , put on a flowkooler from summit,also changed manifold(accel)& 24svo inj.while front was apart, now I have hesitation& backfire to deal with. :crazy: :mad ...my back is killin me .
