Default Correct Oil Pump for an '86?

Spent a good part of the evening trying to fit my 86 oil pan onto a Melling M-55 oil pump (with 55-S1 pickup). It will not go together and I've had it.

Can someone chime in as to if this is a corrct combo? Any p/ns? TIA

I think that is the pump I have on my 86, but I have the 55-S3 pickup. It matched the one I took off exactly. Just buttoned up the pan tonight.

Is the pickup brazed on yet ?? Did you set up the pickup for depth in pan ?? Where is the interference ?

Yes, it is brazed. It hits the baffle. The previous oil pump was also a M-55 and 55-S1 which worked fine on a aftermarket pan.
The pan was about 8 inches deep so I went to a stock pan that doesn't catch on speed bumps.

Interesting, I'm going to check this morning with the parts store that sold me the combo. Good thing I cooled down overnight!

The pick up should always be close to the bottom of the pan. If that pick was right for an 8" deep pan, it can't be right for a stock pan. One needs to measure, position and check all clearances before they permanently attach the pick up to the pump. The Melling, M-55 is the stock oil pump and normally a good choice.

RACE ON!!!
