Default Surface rust on never used clutch assy.

Nobody is going to believe this...I have a Pressure Plate, Disc and 40 pound Hays Flywheel that I found recently...(stored away in my basement)...that I forgot about. It has to be something I bought in the late 70's...Zoom Clutch and Disc...for my long gone 70 Corvette. The boxes they came in are so old...they have completely deteriated.
My question...there is just a bit of surface rust on them...what to use to remove?

There are a number of liquid rust removers. I've read you can use steel wool, turpentine and elbow grease. Another thing you can do if there is not oil or grease on the parts is to boil them in distilled water for 15 minutes and the red rust (ferric oxide) will be converted to black rust (ferrous oxide). Ferrous oxide is stable (its actually one way to blue steel) and ferric oxide isn't and will keep on making red rust.

If it is just surface rust you can clean the flywheel and pressure plate face with 320 grit sand paper on a D.A. sander or a electric palm sander, i wouldn't worry about the rest, but you could shoot it with wd-40 and blow it off, if it makes you feel better.

320 grit on a DA works
wire wheel in a 3/8 drillmotor works
if you're really ''tool challenged'' you can use a ''boy scout'' knife at low angle to surface
