Default 91 Bogs and Dies at Stop Sign

Long time reader but a new member.
As I was saying, My stock 91 except for Magnaflow cat back exhaust, with 84000 mi Just died at a stop sign and would not restart. Had it towed to the nearest "Stealer". They told me that 3 of the fuel injectors were bad and they wanted $2000 to fix it !! I told them that I didn't want to pay for Delphi's bailout and the tow truck driver just droped it on the driveway and I pushed it into the garage. Looking at my estimate from the stealer they are charging $178/ea for the injectors??
Is this correct...over $1400 for parts and the rest is labor??
Can the injectors fail so abruptly?
Are the Bosch (0280150561 b9b-22lb) injectors that I have read about a good replacement ?
I have just purchased the Haynes Repair manual for the 84-96 Vett,
Is this a repair that an averge mechanically inlined guy can do ?
Any replies or advice would be greatly appreciated !!

Priceless!!

..and how did they diagnose that 3 of 8 injectors where bad? Sounds like a load of crap, and they want to charge you $2K!!!! Yikes..

Good decision on your part to get it home.

- First, check your Fuel Pressure, make sure your FP didn't give up the ghost

- Check for spark at one of your plugs

- If no spark, check your coil..

- If you had some FI's working the car should still run, period. I have had at least 2 of my FI wiring harnesses off and car runs, lower RPM, but runs...

Also, changing out FI's is not a hard job....

Thanks for the advice....already checked for spark....it was strong and fuel shot out of the open plug port when I turned it over.
I don't have any more time today but will have all day Sat. to check it out more in depth.
Any other advice will be very helpful...Thanks again

If you have to replace your injectors, try these guys! There fair in price.

I would also check to see if your fuel pump is still working. I just upgraded to 30# injectors and they only costed a couple hundred dollars. If you do find that some of the injectors are bad, go ahead and replace all of them. Usually it is cheaper to buy all 8 rather than one or two at a time, plus it won't take long for the still working injectors to crap out on you. Good luck!

The first thing to check are the inj 1 & 2 fuses.

Same thing happened to my 91 when I first bought her. It was the ignition module. CHANGE THE IGNITION MODULE. I would rule that out first. Good luck. And, let us know what it was.

Run through the basics before you start buying anything:

Spark
Fuel
Air

All of these together make Power, leave out one and your left with mr winky in your hand.

Now I am confused ???.....Checked the FP from the schrader valve
(40 psi)....checked for spark again and the plug sparked strong against the intake....so I went and bought a multi meter and checked all the injectors for resistance.....all but 2 were around 16.3 ohms and the other (passenger side front one) was at 15.5 and the one next to it was at 10.6
What do I check next ??? Any sugestions ??
Car turns over and tries to start but will not start...and the more I push the gas makes it worse ???
ManyThanks ...in advance for any insight into this frustrating problem !!

Default died and won't restart

you didn't say anything about checking the trouble codes. pull the codes and see what you have. a bad coolant temperature sensor, bad map sensor, etc. may be the cause. hope you get it running.

Thanks for your reply,
Sorry....yes I tried to get any trouble codes...all it does is flash "service engine soon" once then twice and repeats.
Also I can hear the engine fan kick on when I do that.....Is that supposed to happen?
What is the MAP sensor?
1991-1994 does'nt have a MAF (mass air flow) sensor.
Would the coolant temp. sensor stop it from running?
With 1 or 2 FI bad it should still run (not good) but still run!!
I think tomorrow I will try to bypass the Catalytic converter to see if that is the cause.
Also "Morley" sugested to check the inj 1 & 2 fuses.....I would gladly do that if I knew What and where they are ?????
I appologize for my lack of motor knowlege but I am trying and learning alot !!

joe3906 had a good suggestion, check out your ICM. You had mentioned that your engine "trys" to start, which indicates that the engine is getting some dose of

1) Fuel
2) Spark

Question is: Is your ICM working correctly to trigger at the proper time to discharge the coil voltage to your spark plugs? My experiance with ICM's is that when they go bad, they quit completely, and the engine won't even show signs of trying to turn over, but maybe there are other signs of a marginally working ICM with symptoms such as yours. Anyway....check it out.

Is your '91 an HEI type rear manifold mount distributor??

inj 1 & 2 are the injector fuses and should be in the main fuse block and are labeled inj 1 & inj 2

Thanks for the input....
Yes my 91 has the HEI type distributor.....mounted at the firewall at the intake manifold.
I did get it to fire this morning with a really rough idol....only for a few seconds (15) then it died. It was like it was only runing on a couple of cylinders ???
Still working on it and checking this site for any information that might lead my in the right direction !!

You need to replace your injectors, you have multec's (factory install) and they are known to be junk. Since 2 of them are reading low ohms you know they are shot, and may be causing problems with the injector circuits, causing the no running problem.

Thanks agian Morley !!
I am thinking the same thing !!
It is nice to be re-assured from someone with knowledge about this problem !
Since the GM injectors are junk would you recommend the Bosch FI for replacement...???

What type of injectors do you have..and how many miles on them ??

I have read.....on the 91 model that stock injector failure is common and may prevent the vehical from starting.

Yes, the Bosch injectors are an excellent replacement.
