not really, especially since you're using synthetic oil & you're in a warmer climate. the L98 oil "cooler" is really better at being an oil "warmer". and yes, its the adapter-like circular component that the oil filter screws into.

That little adapter chunky looking thing and the coolant line going from the block and then another to the front of oilpan are all it is.

yeah, its not really important as a cooler, its more of a warmer on cold mornings. You can delete it entirely if you wish.

I like to think of it as a fluid temp equalizer.

If you take it off, bank on your oil temp going up 10-15 degrees.

I agree. I picked up a solid 20 degrees in oil temp without it. I do not know when the rumor began that it doesn't cool. Sure does work on my car.

That's exactly what happened to mine as well.

It won't hurt at all to leave it there in spite of the extra plumbing. Make sure you have new hoses and use good screw-type clamps. Inspect the metal tube that goes around the front of the pan to make sure it's in good condition as well as the tee-fitting where the hose from the tube meets the heater hose.

BTW, use a PF1218 filter as it will hold nearly a full quart and it doesn't stick down below the stock oil pan.

Correct me if I've misunderstood, but, haven't we heard of disasters from reusing the old oil cooler with a new engine.

Yep. I was the guy waving that flag earlier this year. Small metal trash fills up the small capilarries in the cooler. Then they dump into the motor and tear up #5 main. Reusing them is ok. Just not after an engine failure involving metal debris. It is a good idea to replace it with a new motor if the budget will allow.

and i was the guy who followed suit, calling my mechanic just 10 minutes before they fired up my new engine (after prior engine disaster) with the old oil cooler installed (solvent flushed).

by the way, it should also be mentioned that flushing out the old cooler with solvent after a debris disaster still will not get all the garbage out, and you will risk the same result.
