Default Pete and Jake noisey gear drive on a L98

Can the timing chain on a 91 L98 be replaced with a noisy gear drive? A mechanic told me no, it would mess with the knock sensor. Has anyone installed a gear drive? Did it cause problems? I love that whine.
Thanks,
JR

It's actually Pete Jackson. The hydraulic roller version is a "quiet" version and doesn't mess with your knock sensor. Being said though I wouldn't bother, a double roller cloyes chain is a fantastic chain, it costs less and is quieter.

I don't think I could stand driving a car with one of those noisy gear drives. Waaay to obnoxious if you ask me.

I had one on a car in the past and they are way too noisy. Sounds cool at first, then drives you crazy later. My .02

I've heard even the "quiet" ones can cause problems...

On a street engine I'd steer clear of a gear drive setup. The noise can become REALLY annoying over time. If I wanted to move away from a chain, I'd go in the opposite direction and opt for a rubber toothed-belt setup from CompCams.

As far as someone saying the drive won't effect the knock sensor; I wouldn't be too sure about that. Folks trying to sell a product may say most anything to make the sale.

I've also read about harmonics created by the Gear Drive effecting distributor ignition timing and maybe even the valve springs.

Just my opinion.

A "noisy" gear drive is the same thing except for cars.

Well as the first person who said that it wouldn't affect the knock sensor let me justify that by saying that I actually ran one on my LT1 for some time, it didn't affect the knock sensor. You could hear it was in there but you kinda had to know what to listen for.
