Default Single mass flywheel question for LT4

Zf Doc thinks my DM flywheel with 92k on it isn't going to cut it for my 383 stroker. So I am going with a single mass, as I beleive they are cheaper, albeit noisier, which is OK. What are the most popular choices for you SM guys??

There are two choices that I am aware of.

1) Fidenza aluminum. It's a lovely piece, but I think it's TOO light. ~12 lbs.

2) F-Body steel. The only thing, this has to be machined down .090 from factory to fit right. ~22lbs.

Whatever you do, get the internals balanced and then the flywheel can be neutral balanced.

I believe the setup from Carolina Clutch (Fidanza) is currently the best Single mass setup for LT-1/LT-4's but someone with a little more info needs to chime in and help ya.

I am very happy with the steel F-body one.
Aluminum seemed too light. I had heard of an old wives tale where the centers of the aluminum would tear out under lots of TQ.
It will take a breif period for your left leg/ankle/foot muscles to re-learn how to get the smooth touch again.

Try Exotic Muscle

They have the flywheel alone or a great clutch. Holds my 383 LT4 great.

Default Fidanza and Valeo Pressure plate

I've got the Fidanza and Valeo pressure plate and a stage II sprung hub disc from Carolina on a stock LT4. Works great no problem with starting from stop. Definitely better acceleration in lower gears but you have gear ratle at idle and gear resonance between 1 to 2K acclerating under heavy load. The good part is can't hear it in 6th. You can drive around the rattle. Yeah and I had the problem with Carolina disc labeled backwards.

I recently tuned a 95 C4 with a 9:1 blower engine with an 8PSI Pro-chrager. It also had 410 gears and the single mass flywheel from SPEC. The flywheel was their lightest offering. The noise from the ZF was acceptable idling in nuetral with the clutch out. But upon take off I felt that the flywheel was too light. The car was very easy to stall from standing stop take offs. Especially if one wasn't used to the clutch as it was very touchy and easy to stall.

If the flywheel is too light then you don't have the inertia to keep the engine going off idle. When I raced off road dirt bikes I rode a 550cc two stroke KTM. I always had bronze rings pressed onto the flywheels to soften the hit and also to help keep me from stalling the engine in the tight stuff. I will be using a Mcleod street twin with an aluminum flywheel, but that system uses a two discs plus a steel floater disc. So with that added weight it should be just about right.
