Air Pump Eliminator, Who uses it?
Just wanted to know the pros and cons. I have long tube headers with all the emissions tubing.

replaced air pump with bracket sometime ago..just installed new on 89
korvette4u air pump elimination
cleaned up compartment rather well...
Air pump and all of its related components can be removed.( precat and cat also) the egr system could also be removed...no codes will show unless 190*F Tstat is used, but can be fixed with doide.
this will certainly fee up some hp...how much?....opions vary from 10- 25 hp, i dont know if a dyno has been done to prove this..
i believe there's one in the for sale section:

Shouldnt free up any HP, just a cosmetic mod basically.

No that would be pretty much proven, it doesnt give you back any power, the pulley on the AIR spins pretty freely. It does remove about 10lbs. from the front end though. No dyno test has shown any substantial gain, nothing more than a couple HP, which is a variance you would expect on 2 tests on an untouched car.

I see yours is newer then mine. I have a 85, so make sure they use the same ac bracket before you buy it.

I bought it and swapped it out at the track. Gave my car nothing in the 1/4 mile. The hooker headers prevented me from using the rear alternator brace. This caused my alternator case to snap in half 3 hrs from home. If you use it make sure the rear of the alt is supported well.

The alternator has a support that bolts to the engine at the exhaust manifold and most people with headers get rid of it, but you really need that support or your alternator will crack, the AIRs brace holds it steady from above well enough so that this doesnt happen. But when you do the eliminator without modifying the rear support, the alternator is just hanging there and will crack.

My pump was dying last year so i removed it and built an eliminator. I am still using the rear alt support with this setup. It has worked perfect since install and sure cleans up the engine bay and makes removing the valve cover a snap.

In my '85, I didn't like the look of the eliminator pulley... So I took the air pump apart, hollowed it out, polished it a little a put it back on.
I have no data to back up my beliefs, but I really do think that had to free up some power. The pump I took off definitely was not a 'free spinning pulley.' But what I put back on was. Maybe it was just the fresh bearing grease I added.

I rebuilt my l98, stroked it it a 383, put ported vortec heads on, a 780 holley, and LEFT the pump on! I have NO emmissions laws, either. What I used it for was as a pump on my crankcase. Ever see those vacuum pumps advertised in jegs for hundreds of dollars, that need rebuilt every few passes? I set the pump up just as one of those, as a crankcase evecuation pump. It works GREAT!
So you might consider actually re-plumbing it instead of spending the money to make/buy a bracket. It does make a difference.
