Default need advice on reprogramming

I purchased a 96LT4 with a leaking head gasket and am modifying it. I am adding long tube headers, porting the heads and intake, and installing a hotcam or similar grind. Also adding a lower thermostat and 4.10 gears.

My question is, i have no idea what needs to be done to the ecm. I have never modified a computer controlled vehicle and am lost. Can i send the computer out to be redone? What should be done. I have heard of people altering spark advance, idle, fan, speedo, etc. It sounds like this is something i need to do, but I am not capable of doing ti myself. Also, when this is done, is there still trial and error such as on a carb'd vehicle, with tweaks here and there till it runs right? I have heard of some reprograms just not being spot on. I am nervous about dumping monet and effort into the car and not having it perform as well as it can.
Any advice or leads would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

What should be done. Depends on the mods - probably everything you mentioned +

It sounds like this is something i need to do, but I am not capable of doing ti myself. Why not?

Also, when this is done, is there still trial and error such as on a carb'd vehicle, with tweaks here and there till it runs right? Sorry to be Bill Clinton, but it depends on your definition of right.

I have heard of some reprograms just not being spot on. Definitely

I am nervous about dumping monet and effort into the car and not having it perform as well as it can. Then you'll have to invest money into equipment and lots of time into learning and trial and error.

OK, so what exactly do I need to reprogram my ECM? a computer? Software? How would a novice begin to tackle this problem??
