This is my very 1rst post in this section, and I can promise you all I'm a complete moron when it comes to scan & tune. In anticipation of my next round of mods (please see sig), I feel I need to begin learning scan/tune 101, in fact lets start me in 1rst grade.
I'm inquiring into the free s/w to start beacuse I need to ease myself into this, and over time as I gain knowledge, I might go for the more sophisticated (and costly) programs. But for now......
1. Will Moates or WinALDL s/w successfully read the ECM in my '90?
2. I can get a free laptop, but the OS is only Win 3.1. Will Moates or WinALDL run on 3.1?
3. What websites are best for learning about either of these programs, how to use them, how to interpret results, etc?
4. What references do I use to know: a) what proper readings should be with mods installed, and b) what is considered out of whack and requires correction/adjustment.
Now you can see that with my questions, they qualify me as an absolute idiot
Re: Zero Knowledge - Need To Start - WinALDL, etc. (bradvette)
Brad, download Datamaster for your car. It has a very comprehensive instruction manual included. It also can be used 20x for datalogging before you have to pay for it. For the money its probably the best laptop based tool to use. And its free to download so check it out at: http://www.ttspowersystems.com
But you might need at least a windows 98 based machine to run this with, I am not sure if it will run with windows 3.1

Tom, you're right  I must have had my eyes going south reading our emails  The price of Datamaster + ALDL cable hardware isn't bad....both togther its $219
TTSPowersystems says you need at least Win 95 to run it.
Looks like I better find another laptop somewhere :D

for what you want to do a Auto x Ray unit will do the job, About $159. and it will perform well on the 90s, they are not quite s useful on the erly 84-86 models due to the differnt ecm speeds.
Re: Zero Knowledge - Need To Start - WinALDL, etc. (bradvette)
if you are in need of a cheap copy of win95 - IM me, i have a few "legal" copies laying around that include the book with "registration number"
win95 is very resource friendly - if my certification test memories are correct, i think a 486-50 with 4MB of ram and like 90MB of disk space is like the minimum requirement. but i could be wrong!
