Default unsoldering chip from memcal - how hard is it

How hard is it ti unsolder chip on memcal without damaging it from the heat an still be able to slide a new chip in? Or should I just use the piece I got from mates to bypass the chip?

It depends on your soldering skills. I tried and I ruined it. Just use the adapter from Moates. It's far simpler.

I cut them out with finger nail clippers near the chip, and then place the new one inside and solder it together.

Here's some pictures:

I agree with cumbercr. I did one once, and i have good soldering skills. I didnt ruin the memcal, but for what the adapter costs, a much better option.

Also, if you are deadset on reading the stock chip, get the Moates readout header. that one is a no-brainer.

I'll stick to the adapter. I have had everything but have never hooked it up as the car has been down. I may need to get new passwords to download things I ordered including bin etc. I need to find someone to help with computer stud as I don't know all that stuff.

I can post up whatever bin you want for download if you like. I'm sure there's plenty of help here for you.

Thank you. When I get the car on the road again I would like to start checking the stock settings and see if they can be improved. I had installed some Bosch III's on the other engine and a adjustable fuel pressure regulator which I will put back on after I drive it the way it is. I also have a polished stock intake I would like to install. I know Jon from FIC has told me I should get a tune for main these changes. My goal is for fuel economy, as my best with the previous engine had been 33.4 mpg. I know I can get better than that yet, goal is for 40 based on fill-ups at the pump not computer readout on the car. Just a challenge to do.

Unsoldering is much more difficult than soldering. I clipped the old chip and soldered in a socket.

The trick is to get the socket pins separated from the IC pins. If you try to do it when the MEMCAL is assembled that is VERY difficult. The pins just slip right out, so pry out the EPROM and the pins will come with it. Then remove the socket pins from the EPROM pins and you're there.

There is a company out there called Custom Chips. They have a very high rating and I believe the price is like $65 for a custom burn.
