Default How to Use Plug

Hi, I am new to this technology. I am trying to connect my 85 to my laptop. I bought an 88 35th that a few years ago and the guy gave me a box of extras, including a OBD1 USB cord in the box, so I an trying to connect my 85 to a software that I downloaded yesterday for free... think its Tunerpro? I tried hooking up to the car and I am getting nothing. What exactly do I have to do to get this to work or am I missing something? I would like to know if my injectors are correct for my car and was hoping there was some kind of software program to tell me this.

The software (That scans your car) will not tell you anything about what injectors are in your car. You need to look at the tune to see what is listed and the actual injector to see what is in the car.

If your BLMs are close to 128 when in closed loop mode through all driving conditions you can probably feel comfortable that the injectors match the tune in the ECM. If the BLMs are showing that they are pulling fuel out (running lean) someone might have put bigger injectors in the car without changing the tune. If you have a variable fuel pressure regulator, you can make the BLMs go lean or rich.

Maybe I am not understanding the mechanics of this stuff. I have a stock ecm , but replacement motor close to stock specs. Is there software out there that will read what my stock ecm is doing or must I have a tuned ecm or prom installed?

You need to make sure you have the correct driver for your cable. Virtually 100% of these cables use the FTDI integrated circuits, so try this site:

http://www.ftdichip.com/FTDrivers.htm

You check under the Device Manager to see if your computer is recognizing the cable and installing the correct driver. It will be under something like "USB devices".

All ECMs put out a continuous stream of data. It's just a random series of numbers unless you have the correct "data definition" file. For TunerPro that would be a .ADS or .ADX file. You need to download the correct file for your car. You have a $32B mask ID and a 1227165 ECM. See this link:

Thanks Cliff, I will see if I can get this to work. I am loading this on a new windows 8 laptop. The laptop loaded the software for the usb plug, but I will make sure it is the correct driver.
Thanks

So I have been messing with the ALDL cord and Tunerpro rt, for the life of me I cant figure out how to use the software.....driving me nuts. I did some research on other software and came across WinAldl and it was so much more user friendly. I just couldn't figure out what or how I was supposed to input to get the Tunerpro to work on my 85. So now that I have some kind of feedback from my ecm, I need to know what it all means.

You need to set up a TunerPro connection before you can do anything. It's sort of obscure. Go to Preferences and then choose Data Acq/Emulation. "Use Plug-in" should be selected. Click "Configure Plug-In Component". This is where you configure your connection. When that is done, click OK.

The ECM spits out a series of numbers. The meaning of the various numbers differs from year to year. You usually use some kind of template file to tell the software what the numbers mean. For example, #1 might be MPH, #2 might be RPM, etc. Sometimes the templates are built in to the software (Diacom is like that -- you tell it your VIN and it figures out which template to use). Other software requires that you download and choose the correct template for your ECM (TunerPro works that way). I don't know how WinALDL works because I have a later ECM with a completely different setup. I use Diacom, which is no longer available. It cost over $700 when I bought it in 2000, so the free software obviously has taken away all their customers.

Here's a site that explains what the various parameters are and what they mean:

Look at your BLMs(Block Learn Multipliers). They vary between 108-160 I think. 128 is the nominal value. If your injectors and fuel map are correct for the motor, the BLMs should be close to 128. The BLMs indicate how much fuel the computer is adding or removing from the base tune, 128 being the tune is perfect. Record your data while driving under various RPMs and throttle positions, then review at home. Also, make sure the engine is warmed up and in closed loop mode. Ignore any readings when the computer is in open loop mode. Review what Cliff posted too!

To expand on that... The ECM limits the BLMs to a minimum of 108 and a maximum of 160. If you hit the limits you have no idea what the true numbers are. If you do hit the limits you need to fix something because you have problems.

128 is the "target" value. It is only valid if you're using 100% gasoline. If you are using 10% or 15% ethanol fuel then the BLMs will be off slightly. You can adjust that by changing the ideal AFR parameter. I have seen various values from 14.3 to 14.5.

One of the problems with BLMs is that they are a relatively crude indication of what your engine is doing. Your ECM is constantly adjusting the BLMs (the so-called "learning" process), so you can't just look at a BLM number and say that's THE value. To get the best idea of what your engine is doing you need to datalog and chart the result. I wrote an article on this very subject:

Seems like those values are all over the place as seen in my last post.

Hi Cliff, just to clarify, when you say close to 128,or 128,you mean when you datalog your car BLMs are "stuck" steady at 128 in closed loop or there is some sort of fluctuation up down ,i mean about 128-126-128-124-128-126-128....or you have a 128 steady.i can say the same for AFR: is your wideband gauge steady at 14.7?i just trying to understand how perfect are your cars guys.Example,if your BLMs are most in the 118-120-112 -120-118-116-118-120-124-118-116-110 range what do you deduce?(being the car stock 85',steady pressure at 40 psi, stock injectors ohmed all at 16.5ohm,AFR wideband in the 14.3-14.8 range up down)

Something is wrong if your BLMs vary that much. Do you have a datalog that you can post somewhere that everyone can look at? The ECM won't change the BLMs from the range of 108-160. I suspect something is wrong with your computer setup. Are the other values being displayed realistic? RPMs match up to what you are seeing on your dash? Are you using winALDL still? Are you sure it is configured right? Maybe you can video what is going on with your phone and post to youtube? Where in central florida do you live? Maybe someone can help you that is local.

I have a snap shot of it in my albums, I tried to post it 2 posts ago, but it is too small to see. How so I get it to the post?

HI 7d8. I did find the picture finally. That data doesn't look quite right. I think you are real close to getting good data. There were some other values that didn't look right either. O2 cross counts should be going up, unless the car was cold. I emailed the guy I just bought my new ALDL adapter from. He is in Cocoa. He said he would be glad to help you get set up. His name is John; from 1320 Electronics. His number is 321-480-6182. He has been very helpful to me whenever I've had any questions.

Your 85 is the $1F definition, and not the 32B as Cliff suggested. He was thinking 88. Also, does the cable have an open closed switch? I should be closed.

again the basic
Tunerpro rt uses some definition files for dataloging
when you lauch the application you have to enter:

.bin file
open .bin = $1f.bin

definition file
open .xdf = $1f.xdf

under acquisition

import definition >from ADS file

open A20.ads

register yourself at Gearhead-efi.com
you can dowload all definition for all corvettes c4
here the 870 ecm definition for tunerpro

your file is

HLH 85 vette tpi 700r4 .bin
