Default Help!..I can't get my usb cable to work.

I just bought the ALDL USB > OBD1 cable.

I can't get the cable to communicate with my computer. I've gone through all of the troubleshooting options and nothing works. I even downloaded the most recent driver off of their website and it didn't help.

I've got a good Laptop, with plenty of power, running XP. I also installed it on my desktop to see if I could get the cable to communicate....nothing.

Anybody have the same issues??? Any ideas?

I wrote up a brief an install guide intended for the moates USB cable for use with TunerProRT for the 165 ecm awhile back. Perhaps it will be applicable to your situation.

To connect the Moates Xtreme ALDL cable to TunerProRT, you may need to re-assign the default USB Serial Port Com port using the Windows Device manager.

For 86-89 165 MAF ecms, Set the cable in 10 k mode with the small switch on the side of the interface box. This is required to put the ecm into ALDL mode, so that it can accept the 8192 baud polling message.

On your pc, open the device manager, which can be found within:
Settings->Control panel->Administrative Tools->Computer Manangement->System Tools->Device Manager->Ports (COM & LPT)->USB Serial Port(Com?)

With the Cable connected, you should see USB Serial Port assigned to one of the Com ports indicated in parenthesis as (Com1,2,3 etc.). The value in parenthesis will indicate the default port setting.

First try using the same setting in TunerProRT. Set the same default com port in TunerProRT under: tools->preferences->ALDL/Emulation Comm. Click the Test For Valid Cable Using Settings button to test connection. The Interface type should be set to normal serial or Max232-2trans/AP bypassed depending upon the version of TunerProRT being used. If the same com port is available, tests ok, and can connect to the ecm, then you're good to go.

If the default port setting isn't available for selection in TunerProRT, then you need to reassign the port to one that is available. Back to the device manager:

On your pc, open the device manager, which can be found within:
Settings->Control panel->Administrative Tools->Computer Manangement->System Tools->Device Manager->Ports (COM & LPT)->USB Serial Port(Com?)

Select USB Serial Port (Com1,2,3 etc.) and right click->properties-> select the Port Settings tab ->click the Advanced... button -> Select Com Port Number (select an un assigned port that is also available for selection in TunerProRT under tools/preferences/ALDL Emulation...) Typically Com1-8 is available for selection in older versions of TunerProRT. Versions 4.14 and later support additional com port settings.

Set the Latency Timer to 16 ms (or leave as default) in the same Advanced settings window under BM Options Latency Timer (msec). I've had good results using Com13 and 16 ms latency for both TunerProRT V4.14 and TunerProRT V5.

Be sure to also set the same com port selected above in TunerProRT under: tools->preferences->ALDL/Emulation Comm. Click the Test For Valid Cable Using Settings button to test connection. The Interface type should be set to normal serial or Max232-2trans/AP bypassed depending upon the version of TunerProRT being used.

Note: I've had situations where the Test for Valid Cable Using Settings has failed, but the cable was still functional and able to connect and log data with TunerProRT. If all else fails try and connect and aquire data if you think the settings are correct.

With IGN key in the run position and the cable connected to both the ALDL connector in the car and the PC, try to connect with TunerProRT. If the connection fails, repeat the steps as necessary to be sure that the com ports are set properly and haven't changed from their previous values. If any of the com port settings have changed, reset them to the appropriate values and re-test the connection or attempt to connect.

I also had to disable the check sum in TunerProRT under: tools->preferences->ALDL/Emulation Comm to get mine to connect

Mine was only reading a partial data stream and I could not figure it out. It ultimately turned out that I had to reset the jumpers to a different setting and then I was able to get all the data flowing.

Which software are you using & are you getting partial data or no data?
