Driving Technique for Data Logging?

When data logging using a computer and TTS DataMaster what is the best way to go about testing? Should you let it idle for x amount of time and then run through the gears? How much time should you spend at different throttle positions? WOT? How much recording time is actually needed to see normal operations?

I did a couple scans last night but wasn't sure if I was capturing useful information for the tuner. I drove the car a mile or so until I got the check engine light to come on, and have the DataMaster program start beeping at me that there was a DIC code. I also did the run back home in transmission mode. I don't know it that was useful either. Of course I could not make heads or tails of the data, but just wanted to get the DIC codes from it and be able to send it off the the tuner and have it be useful data for him to use.


Also - any recomendations for a consolidated learning resource for tuning. I know these pages are chock full of that kind of information but its still hit or miss here even with the search function. It would be nice to have some kind of step by step for the newb tuner.

I think it all depends on what you're datalogging for... to be clear just record in the area your doing adjustments in.
I was going through the gears each time, but it's hard on the car and doesn't give me any useful info until I hit 3rd anyway. So now I just do a rolling 3rd to WOT 5850rpm.
and watch my BLM's in the normal driving condition areas.

I think Moates had some good tuning links, It's a bit of a steep learning curve

I just drive normally and vary the conditions to represent your driving.
Load it up by accel from low speeed in top , WOT pass from stop , normal stop / go traffic.The datalog will show up anything out of the ordinary.
Primarily you are looking for knock retard under load conditions and the BLM /Int numbers

Datamaster records all ECM activity; you just review whatever you are interested in when you play back.
Will give info from cold start through closed loop to WOT
