When the SES light comes on, does it run rough?? I had a similar problem but my 89 would run rough and stall when trying to idle and had no code. It also smelled like it was running rich. Mine ended up being the ECM.

There are several codes on an '85 that will turn the SES light on but not affect driveability (not send the thing into Limp-in mode). Knock signal, EGR code, etc. With no codes Stored it's more of a head scratcher.... if I remember right I had a problem a few years ago (when I first got this car) with the connector to the MAT sensor under the intake plenum - the lock tab was broken and the plug would fall out of the sensor. This would turn the SES on intermittently (not All the time) but not set a trouble code...

with this 85 i did a full engine rebuild & i checked all sensor conections they were all ok but i found 2 suspect relays witch i replaced... the last problem i had was code 32 EGR witch is not now registering that code but the idle is up at 850 then down to 500..... very annoying
