Default noob with comp. can"t get car to talk to comp

I"m starting with absolutely zero comp. skills, bought a comp. & Diacom program here on the forum . My car is a 92 LT1 ,no mods. A systems Eng. friend is walking me thru the operation proceedures. We are having no luck in getting the car to talk to the comp.
The program comes up on the screen but shows no input from the car. I am connected thru the ALDL under right knee. Is there some other connection required?
Thanks.

What kind of laptop and what speed is it?
You are hooked into the right port, no worries there.

The early LT1 cars with the OBD1 style connector needs to have an external power source for the cable. That small gauge wire should be the power cord that connects to a cigarette lighter adapater, which you should have received with the Diacom kit.
