Help! What goes in this hole in the intake (87)?

Hi guys,
My son-in-law is putting back together their 87 after an engine rebuild and ran across a hole in the intake manifold that we can't figure out what went there. See the pic below where the blue handle is pointing. This is on the drivers side. The front of the car is to the left of the pic. What goes in this hole? What fitting is on the end if it is a sensor?

Also, on the drivers side head, there is a hole near the front spark plug that holds the fan controller. There is also a hole on the passenger side head near the last spark plug. Is there a sensor also in that opening or did the machine shop remove a plug and not put it back in?

The hole in the pic is a vacuum tap for the PCV. The one in the head is for a temp sender.
