F/S DANA 44 rear w/ 4.11's, 0 miles on rebuild. [added 3.73 option]
*********SOLD 6/10/04********
I have a DANA 44 rear with 4.11 gears that was recently rebuilt by ZIP. They are forum sponsors and Corvette knowledgeable.
Let's get right to the pics....
As you can see, it has excellent pattern and the case is stamped 4.11 The gears are Dana gears. The rebuild included all new bearings and posi clutches and retainers and a new carrier bearing cap.
The story: I removed my rear for a gear swap, 3.07 to 4.11 with no indication previously that anything was wrong. I found that the posi retainer clips were bent out of shape (very common) and a carrier bearing cap was cracked (do a search, I posted about this). To complete a timely repair I order a complete unit with 3.73's that's in the car now. The 4.11's would be too much with my steeply geared Richmond gearbox, I never should have got them.
Weight is approximately 85 pounds. It is still in the packaging it was sent to me in.
Cost===> Well, we can discuss. For comparison, a similar unit with no exchange will run $2,300, if you have a rebuidable core, you can get yours rebuilt with new gears for around $1,300, I will want more than $1,300. If you want to swap D-36 to D-44, it's probably a better deal. I don't know the suppliers' policies on cores for a different rear than ordered. If anyone wants to jump in with experience, that's OK. I plan to make a fair deal.
PS. If you want 3.73 gears the rear in my car now has only 1000 miles on it. I would consider selling that one if you prefer 3.73 and I'll change out the gears in the rear listed here. (I'm looking to run 3.3x gears)

I would be interested in the rear with 3.73s and could offer up my dana 36 as trade but wouldn't i need a different batwing (rear cover), halfshalves, driveshaft, and C-beam to be able to install it?

Yeah, you would need more than the rear but it's a good start. There are several who have done the changeover, check tech tips. Ski_dwn_it put up a pretty good write up on it.
Unfortunately, I have more D44's than I need so I really don't need a D36. Let me know if your still interested. If you plan to race at all you almost NEED to upgrade.

OK I checked the shipping from 21108 to 90802. Realistically your looking at about $100 for UPS ground. Here's the breakdown, when I sent mine out for repair they would not insure for over $1000 unless they packed it. The packaging cost $30, the delivery + insurance is $78.
If you want I can send it in the packaging it was sent to me in for around $75.
Are you interested in the 4.11 rear or 3.73 rear?

Check out Fedex ground, thats how I shipped mine ($38 bucks from NH to NY w/ $1200 insurance)
How I packed it... I bought a large rubbermaid tub, cut a piece of plywood to lie on the bottom, then 1/2 packed it with shipping peanuts cardboard etc.
Put the rear (no batwing) in the container and packed tight with cardboard and peanuts. Then I put the cover on, and drilled holes through the lip of the top where it meets the base and ziped tied the top to the base!
The result was a very nice shipping container with handles (FedEx loved it when I dropped it off), and the nice thing was it could be reusued many times!!
