Default Those of you who have homemade ramps...

Did you find the design plans for them on the net? After changing my oil today I've decided I want to build a wooden ramp lift like I have saw some of you guys post pictures of. So, did you guys just design it the way you wanted or what?

I made some out of 2x10 with no given plans. I checked to see how long and high I could get away with before damage to spoiler. They ended up being about 6 feet long and 11'' high. The ramps are removable from base after up ramps. I used some door hinges to link the base and ramp together. Pull the pin and seperate.
My next set will be steel and fully elevate the car with removable center section. Just have to get off my lazy ****.
Here is a pic. Nothing fancy, but very effective.

Check with forum user Iceman_t1, also known as Tim. He built some really nice home made ramps. I tried to search for his post, but could not get it to work as in I could only find his recent posts with this new "improved" forum.

Those ramps are really nice! great job.

Yeah I'm wanting to build a lift like Iceman_t1. Just wonder if he had plans for his lift or if he just designed it hiself. Maybe he will chime in.

My only worry on wood ramps would be the strength of the wood with a car on it, along with fatigue of the wood. Are those made out of pine? They're really great looking, but pine would worry me (unless of course it's reinforced with some ribs). I would hate to have a car fall on me, so I'm expressing my worries over the posted picture (too much school on such subjects )

Once you get car up ramp, place metal lifters underneath (forgot what they are called) for safety.

I think you're referring to jack stands.

The lowest grade of pine onmy list is good for 500 psi in compression with the load perpindicular to the grain. It looks like he has at two sides that are at least a foot long by 1.5 inches thick.

2x12x400 = 9600 lb per stand assuming they are made out of low grade pine, but put together properly. The are probably a lot stronger.

Without seeing his stands in person, I would still trust them more than Rhino ramps.

I dont know if he designed it himself or what. He sent me the plans for them in adobe format. That was before a computer crash/reformat so I dont have them any longer. I sent him an email and asked him to chime in here.

Hey Larry, I finally got logged back in after the site change.

xs650, thanks for the numbers on compression strength of lumber. I have put my Expedition on the ramp portion of it to do some work. It worked very well.

I trust my wood ramps more than jack stands because they are not as stable laterally as my wood ramps. I got the idea from another forum member and laid it all out in CAD. Here is a pic of the ramps I built.

Thanks,
Larry

I did another layout for a friend who just needs to get one end of his vehicles off the ground. This version just has the ramp section and a landing at the top with wheel stops to prevent going over the end. I have saved so much time and money by doing my own maintainance using these ramps.

If you wouldn't mind I would like the plans too because I've saw a lot of the homemade lifts your really looks very sturdy and well designed.

From C3 land, if anyone is still interested.

Here are the plans. They are a little different than mine. Length may need to be adjusted for C4's.
