baking parts in the oven
boy i could f*** up a wet dream. like an idiot, i put my newly painted valve covers in the oven at 375 degrees. within a few mins, my kitchen was filled with horrid paint fumes and the whole house stinks real bad :cry
i must have had the oven temp way too high? looks like i'll need to sand and re-paint them again.
what is the correct temp and length of time that painted engine parts like valve covers, intake parts, etc. should be in the oven? or is it a dumb idea and unnecessary to even do this?

The more important question is how to get all residues off of the oven surfaces. Remember any residual conatminents could be leached off by fumes from baking certain foods!
Unless you have an oven just for baking parts, just let the paint air dry, wet sand between coats till you get the desired result, shoot a final coat and you will have a very nice result.

Brad, are you thinking of using your refrigerator/freezer for cryo projects? Less fumes I hear... ;)

When prepping parts for paint, I've had success with the following technique:
1) Sand or bead blast.
2) Scrub with oven cleaner (use gloves, eye protection, and wear old clothes.)
3) Scrub with soap and water.
4) Place in oven at 225 degrees (just past boiling, you want to remove water from any pores in the metal).
5) Paint as the part cools (around 100 - 120 degrees always worked for me.)

Don't feel bad I didn't smoke the part I was painting, but you could smell it and it was a lot darker color than what I started with. Some would say I
toasted it.

You have to baste the parts with garlic and butter. Then when you put the parts back on your Vette it'll smell like a Ferrari.

I hear that valve covers go really well with a little tint of sugar on top of them and some spark plugs on the side       :smiliedrool:

That doesn't make my wife nearly as mad as when I clean parts in the dishwasher. Preclean your valve cover with degreaser then run it through the "Potscrubber" cycle. Now you are ready to paint!

ARE YOU GUYS OUT OF YOUR MIND??????????? Please do not do this, the fumes could explode!!! I am not kidding, at the dealership we have a body shop and when we bake cars we only go to 125 max. plastic melts at 225 so do not go anywhere near there you might need a new oven due to the last try. the fumes stay in there for a long time, you might want to buy your wife a new oven and use that one for powder coating in the garage. electric only. sorry about the shouting, i just wanted to make a point :U

A paint booth oven is usually around 160-180 degrees. Most enamels will cure in a couple hours at that temp. The sun works well on darker colors.
