New wheels...what do you think?
I posted this in wheels/tires too....but I think I'll get more replies from you guys. What do you think???
Got my new wheels/tires from aaarims.com for $1180. They're polished new rims w/ Kumho 712's. Just a quick question regarding the balancing that they did...How many of those little weights are normal for the rims (the weights are very small metal squares)? A couple of the rims only have a couple and another one has about 17 (they're small so I really don't think I'll notice them). Is this normal?
Thanks!!!!
And here's a pic
oh...and the smudges that you may see in the pic have already been taken care of by just running a microfiber towel over them.
Overall I'm pretty pleased with the rims...I can't wait to get them on the car!!!!

17, i would be calling aaarims! 17 is not cool :nono: :nono:
That is a lot, probably don't want more then 4-5 weights, at most.

But seriously, they look great. I agree, 17 seems like a lot. Is there any spec on this? What side of the wheel are they on, opposite of the valve stem or close to it?

Re: New wheels...what do you think? (longhorn_C4)
OK..one has 17, another 16, another 7 and another 2. They are clumped in sets of 7 (except for the one that only has 2 on it obviously). They are pretty much on various places on each wheel (some behind the valve and some on the other side of the rim).
Question, if they're balanced properly and don't have any vibration problem, should I still call aaarims and ask them about this? They were balanced on the Hunter machine and I have printouts for each wheel if you think it'll help (my lazy azz will just have to go back outside and get 'em)
Thanks for the feedback thus far!!!!

:iagree: 17 weights is excssive, but it just may be how the tire is mounted. If you can, have the shop remount the tire 180* different than where it is. This may reduce the number of weights required.

My AFS wheels came like this, too. A bit later, they found themselves replacing that rim because it was so out of round you NEEDED that many weights just to balance it. The new wheel(s) came with 2-3 weights each. I'd call them, before it's too late and they won't help.

Re: New wheels...what do you think? (jerseyvette)
Could be the brand of tire. The tire is usually the imperfect of the two and it is what causes the use of weights. Put the wheels with the least amount of weights on the front wheels.

Re: New wheels...what do you think? (BAM92)
Thanks for the advice BAM. I shot them an email explaining the two wheels had excessive weights...They're closed right now, but I sent them an email outlining the excessive use of weights on 2 wheels. If I don't hear back tomorrow, I'll give them a call.
And thanks for the feedback all....I think they look great (minus all the weights)

I run Firestones but had to buy a Kuhmo as a quick replacement. They had a bit of trouble balancing it compared to the Firestones. The Kuhmo did balance but had more weights than the others. Not 17 though.

Re: New wheels...what do you think? (scofolo)
Just to be sure I'm getting this right...each "weight" is about 2-3 cm's x 2-3 cm's in a square shape....does that sound right for a normal one of these weights? I'll snap a couple pics tomorrow to show you.
Thanks again all!!!

Re: New wheels...what do you think? (jerseyvette)
I believe for stick on weights each individual one is .25 ounces. So 17/4= 4.25 ounces, that is alot for this wheel tire combo. I have done many full size 3/4 ton truck wheels that require less. In fact, 4.25 ounces is alot for any non-commercial type vehicle.
I can almost guarantee it's the Kuhmos. Not that they are a bad tire, it's just that experience has proven that the cheaper the tire, the more overall weight for balancing will be required.

That is alot of weight!
:nonod:
My ZR-1 Rims with Goodyear F1 only has 4 on the worst wheel and NONE on the best. The shop that installed the tires on the rims had a new wheel balance machine that they used. The balance machine could tell were the heavy side of the rim was vs the tire so they could spin the tire on the rim and off set the weight of the rim to the tire then add weight if needed after that. Car is smooth at high speed

They look good but I agree that there is something wrong with a wheel that needs that much weight.
