My friend wants to race me - What do you think of this match up?
My friend just bought a 1999 Trans Am (not a WS6) from the original owner. It has a LS1 engine with ram air. The car is basically stock except it has a ground effects kit and has been lowered. It has an upgraded suspension and a strut bar. He does have new wheels (275/40/17). Everything else is stock, including the exhaust. It is an automatic. The car lists as 325 horsepower.
I have a 1991 coupe. It's an automatic. New upgraded street/strip transmission (only 60 miles on it). I have a dual exhaust system from MAD with no cats and Borla mufflers. I have 275/40/17 Firestone Firehawks that grip pretty well. When I race, I usually get a good start and just shoot off. I have never put mine on a dyno, but if you go buy the published hp increases that the exhaust should give me, I could be at 293. Its definitely much faster than the 1990 vette that I drove.
The only other serious races that I have been up against were cars with a bunch more horse power than me. One was an 86 Monte Carlo with a 383 stroker and a bunch of other mods that pushed it over 400 hp. The other was a 25th anniversary Trans Am with an LT1 engine and a whole bunch of mods that he would not tell me about. He claims that he has more than 350 hp. I'd say that he is probably right. I beat both of them without much trouble. (I mainly credit that to great takeoffs and they just couldn't catch up in time)
What do you guys think I am getting myself into with this race?

You should give him a good run in an 1/8 mile but I think he will get you on top.

Up top he should take you in the 1/4. Stock LS1 f-bodies run in the low 13sec range. All depends on the driver though. Good luck!

He will catch you by around 80-100mph depending on how well both of you launch. I'd be really surprised if you beat him to the end of a 1/4 and beyond.
I had a 91 that ran 13.8@98mph. I'd always beat LS1's off the line up to around 80-100mph, beaty to in the 1/4 only a few times. There are a few supposely stock L98 that are fast, but I don't believe they are. Unless the owner bought the car new and knows all the history on it, I have doubts.
I had this one guy tell me for at least two years that his L98 was stock. But yet his auto trans would chirp the tires in second and third. Come to find out later on he had a chip, no cats and high stall converter. He did not lie, he had no idea. But what do you tell a person like that? You're an idiot and have no clue because you know it's not stock.

He can't drive yet. Too much power for him. He just slides around a bunch at the start. I should race him now before he gets used to it. :D

Should be good. Give it your best shot. My 91 seems quick, but, it does need more power. I would love to have 400+HP.

He will catch you sooner or later..... Its as simple as that. Shut it down before he passes you. You might be ok if u get out on him and hes spinning, but... His car is going to be faster.

Ya, I know what you mean. I start feeling it drop off at about 85 - 90 mph. It takes a lot more effort to get going above that, but it still does a good job. I have got it upto 127 before without much of a problem, but that was not is a race situation.

Just rememberto take it to the track, so you can tell us the result.
BTW, I raced a stock 2001 LS1 Firebird and it went 13.40 completely stock with drag radials.(I went 13.20 on that particular run)
So if you can better a 13.40, you should be fine.

First take it to the track for safety and it'll be documented.
I have a friend with a 2000 LS-1 Camaro, automatic. Bone stock he was in the very low 14s. With SLP exhaust, gears, cold air, etc, he is now in the 13.60 range.
It'll be a drivers race.

It'll be a drivers race.
BTW: I know a guy that ran a 12.9 with a bone stock 99 SS, mainly because he's a great drag racer.

Re: My friend wants to race me - What do you think of this match up? (scofolo)
OK from those exhaust mods you have added about 20chp, taking you to around 265chp.
Give yourself a little edge:
1-toss the "frisbee" from the front of your water pump pulley, 10chp
2-install a cut air filter lid with K&N filter, 10chp
3-install a 160deg stat & fan switch, 10-15chp
4-install cut back spark plugs, 5-10chp (use stock gap)
5-bump base timing a little
6-add an AFPR and increase fuel pressure a copla pounds above the stock current value to tune for the air flow increases
Details on the 1st & 4th mods are on my site. These mods will work well even with your SD intake without a chip change.
With these mods and your exhaust system you should run in the low to mid 13s, which will be a good race. Consider that his F-body is much heavier which basically takes up 10-20chp from his LS1.
