Default Rear-view mirror

My father-in-law has a '96 coupe. His interior rear-view mirror has broken and he's been unable to find replacement parts from Chevy or from companies like Mid America. Specifically, it looks like his mounting on the windshield is fine, but there is a ball and socket joint that connects the mounting plate to the movable mirror and the socket piece has broken. Does anyone have a suggestion for how he could repair or replace this? Perhaps additional suggestions for aftermarket manufacturers?

Thank you,

-Dave

Can imagine what it costs at dealership. Ever thought of EBay or salvage yard and just replace entire mirror.

I see them often on ebay for very little money - $10-$25. Also, I remember seeing a post (a few days ago) that the S10 rearview mirror is the same part. Whatever you do, don't pay GM for a new one.

Yeah, salvage yard, but why not upgrade to the elect dim and compass. :yesnod:

yes, my sentiments also - but since the mirror attatches to the window frame via a unique foot, it's not easily replaced with any of the autodimming mirrors that I have seen on the web. One would have to perform some surgery to marry the C4 mirror's mounting foot to a new mirror. Doable with some effort, but not the easy swap that I was hoping for.

Thanks to everyone for their insightful comments. I learned from a lawyer that auto manufacturers only have to stock parts for the first seven years of a model's life. This would explain why the '96 Corvette replacement part isn't available from Chevy.

Good to hear, however, that Chevy couldn't pass up a good part when they made one (actually, it cracked after only seven years...) and they are continuing to use it in the S-10.

I've considered buying one from a salvage yard, but if my father-in-law's part failed due to sun exposure, others might be in a similar condition. If the price is right... or if it's conveniently available on Ebay... it may be the best option.

Thanks again,

-Dave

My father-in-law went to the Chvey dealer tonight and he said the picture of the S-10 pickup's mirror in the parts book is different from what he has on his '96 C4. Could those familiar with the S-10 mirror replacement option let me know if this makes sense to them?

Thanks,

-Dave

Don't know if it would turn up on a search but there was a forum member that put the up grade mirror on his vette, had pics as well. This is a gm part not an aftermarket.

Could you show me this post?? I would really appreciate it!! Also do you know if this is the one with or without the map light? Also wondering if the S10 one is cheaper since it woudlnt have the "corvette tax  "
