Help!!!!!! Lost my Vette keys - What are my options?????
Started my 89vette on Christmas Day where it is stored and that was the last time I had the keys in my hand. I've torn my house apart looking for them and I can't find them (or the spare set that I got when I bought my vette last July). Any suggestions on how to get a new set of keys, especially since the ignition key uses the VATS system???? I've never losts keys before and don't have any idea what to do....
Thanks,
Eric

You'll need to supply the VIN.

Your local Chevrolet dealership can cut you a new set.

Thanks for the info - I called Chevrolet Roadside assistance to get the key codes and the only one they had was the door key code. They did not have the VATS key code. They told me that anything before 1994 was a toss up for the codes being in their system. I'll get a new door key made and hopefully when I get in the car I'll find they lost keys around the seat area or hopefully the
If your cars is a 1993 or older you might want to write that VATS key code down or have another key stored in a safe place!!!

Well, I tried the key the Chevy dealer cut me for the door and it didn't work. So I guess that if I don't locate my lost keys, I'll be paying locksmith fees for door keys and the local Chevy dealer for a new ignition switch!!!!
Learned my lesson the hard way!!!!!!

You can get your doors unlocked with a broom handle and your own hands. The windows easily pull away from the upper weather stripping by the b-pillar.

I didn't use a broom handle though. :jester
These cars are easy to break into, so much so it's scarey. Do yourself a favor and save some money and get yourself a broom handle, or a coat hanger.

Get AAA, best $50 you can spend in year.
They bring you Gas, they tow your car on flatbed, they can jump your car, they can unlock your car.
They can unlock your car for free and flat bed it a few miles for free - if your dealer is far away you may have to pay $20 bucks or so.
I have used my triple AAA card before to help girls that I work with get into their car so they didn't have to pay a locksmith $50.00.
Get an estimate to figure out your Vats code. If the mechanic is going dilly dally and your ignition is in poor shape already (some get loose from people hanging a million keys on their key ring) then you might just want to get a new cylinder and keys.
If the mechanic is worth a damn, it shouldn't take him long to troubleshoot vats code. Needless to say though it will probably cost you $150.00 for new key and labor.
When you get your new key, get an extra key and store it in a safe place.
Good Luck.
PS> I bet your keys are in your car --- I have lost many a set of keys in the seats of floor. Sometimes, the seat grabs my wallet or cell phone too

Re: (xlr8nflorida)
Update on my fiasco - Got a door key cut fom my local Chevy dealer (free through GM Roadside Assistance) and got into my vette. Searched it throughly but keys were not found. Searched my house that night for the extra set of keys and finally found them. I now have a set of keys stashed where my vette is stored for the winter, and another set on my main key ring (instead of a key ring by themselves). Losing my main key ring SHOULD not be an issue.
LESSONS LEARNED - know where your extra set of keys are and think about having a 3rd set stored somewhere safe and accessible. If I had not found my extra keys I would have had to have the ignition switch replaced or have the dealer try VATS codes until they found the right one - Costly either way.
As I stated earlier, GM Roadside Assistance has key codes in their computer system for 1994 up, so getting either key isn't a problem. I got lucky that they had the door key code for my 1989.

Just glad you got it solved. I lost a set in a lake because I forgot to pull them out before wakeboarding.....Ouch...that was a $200 dollar event because of the PKE fob and set of keys needing done up.

I've learned to keep a extra key in my wallet. I locked my keys in my car a few time before and had to call AAA. with a key in my wallet I never did that again. glad you worked it out.

Re: (Alcee1)
A Gm dealership can NOT get key codes for a 1989 car. They only go back to 91 or 92(can't remember don't get a lot of older cars in the shop). Every year we lose a year ex: if we can get a key code for a 92 than next year we can only go back to 93. You will need a copy of your reg., title, insu. card etc. to get the keys made. Also if the codes are still available then the VATS code comes with the key code when it is sent to the dealership.

Re: (coopsl98)
So is what you are saying is that if I have a VATS key for my 1989 vette and I want to get another one made from it, I'm S O L ?????
As far as needing all that info to get keys made - I guess my local dealership is pretty trusting. All I did is call GM Roadside Assistance asking for the key codes. They could only help me with the door code. The only info she asked for is the VIN#, my name, and phone number. She called my local dealer and then called me back in 5 minutes saying that I could pick up my door key. I went there 1/2 hour later to pick up the key - no proof of ownership was asked for. I thought that was strange - I could have seen a nice vette on the street, wrote down the VIN # looking through the windshield, and pick up a free door key to get into it. I wonder how many professional car thieves have tried that angle. Works no problem in Indiana!!!!!!
Hmmmmm........ when does the C6 vette hit the streets?????????
