Default Does anyone use an air/fuel ratio gauge?

Since I got my computer reprogrammed after the rebuild of my motor, I have had a chance to get it dyno tuned. I was thinking of installing an air/fuel ratio gauge just to get an idea whether it's running rich or lean. Granted, it doesn't help me adjust anything but it'll give me an idea as to whether I really need to spend the money getting it dyno tuned. (I obviously realize that doing so would help the setup be as efficient as possible but it's not like I'm racing the car)

Anyone?

Mark

used to...

Not like I can change anything myself though :(

Better deal is, set up a low cost dyno day w/ your car buddies (we did ours for 50 bucks, for 3 "pulls" ) and have your air fuel ratio read under load - wide open throttle  and send the sheets to a tuner...

Those things definately look cool and are a neat toy but i have heard differing opinions on their accuracy. I think some people claim that only a much more expensive wide band setup is actually useful. But I really don't know.

WEH,

What's the difference with a wideband gauge and an air/fuel mixture gauge?

Thanks,

Mark

I think he was referring to a wide-band oxygen sensor setup, maybe...

WEH,

What's the difference with a wideband gauge and an air/fuel mixture gauge?

Thanks,

Mark

Take a look at my web site.

Here is a closeup of the dash where the WB meter is installed.

Don't waste your money on one. I bought one for my car (99' 11 sec T/A) before I had the chance to get it tuned, because I was scared of it running to lean, and the guys at Thunder Racing told me when I was there getting the car tuned that they are a waste of money and he has never seen one read anywhere close to their wideband setup. I watched my a/f gauge and his monitor when they made some dyno pulls on my car and he was right. :yesnod:

Thanks da6speed, I was going to throw one in just to have an idea.... but apparently it sounds like it's not much of an idea...lol.

Guess I'll just send it out and have it dynotuned... thanks again.

True there are ones that are pretend WB meters. However the one I have and others at about $500 and up are real WB meters and have been proven to be just as accurate as the ones on the dynos.

Do your research.

Take a look at http://www.techedge.com.au/.

Default Re: Does anyone use an air/fuel ratio gauge? (ericcer)

I have the same one as ericcer. Very nice setup (I have mine mounted below the radio).
Basic difference between narrow band and wide band:
-Narrowband is only accurate at close to 14.7:1 AFR. Good for normal driving conditions to make sure the car is running properly. However, won't read accurately above ~15 or below low 14's
-Wideband WILL read accurately across the whole range, so you can tell where you're at at WOT when the ratio is in the high 12's / low 13's.

However, unless you have a way of programming your car, you're probably better off spending the $$ at a shop with the programmer, wideband, and a Dyno.

Thanks guys... much appreciated. I'll wait until I go to the dyno and let them do some real tuning...
