I had this happen also …got lucky pulled the motor(actuator)and found grit in it cleaned replaced cleared code never came back…

How do you remove the front actuator? I know there's a plastic panel in the way. Do I unbolt it? Can anyone post pics of the procedure? :confused:

I thought Code 32 was the EGR valve. It's one of the more common ECM codes, right? Most people ignore it.

There is a large C-clip holding it on. Just pull the clip and lift up..

Thanks, I've seen that clip. Maybe that's all that's wrong with mine, too. I'm gonna' check the DIC bulb for the FX-3 next Spring when I remove the radio to ship to Dr. Don's. :thumbs:

Different computer grounding on the ALDL


Pull the actuator off, take the little gear on top off the shock and turn it. If it spins 360 degrees the shock is the problem. If it moves 180 degrees or 90 degrees (dependng on your year) it's the actuator.

You don't have to remove the black inner fender panel to get the actuator off.

I can tell you if you go to the Chevy dealer, you are talking in the area of $600 for the part alone. If you have them do the work, they'll hit you for another ~$180 labor.

Make sure you are fixing the correct item, if it's the shock or the actuator. :rolleyes:

The shocks are around $200 each you will have to call GM for a price on the actuator

$200? Wow! Around here, the dealer wants $600 for each FX3 shock. I'm not kidding! (~$600/shock and ~$600/actuator).

Just replaced my right front. If the gear on the top of the shock spins all the way around, it is broken and needs to be replaced. I paid $200.00 for a new shock.

Make sure you do your own diagnostics. Find out what's broken. The shock and actuator are big bucks.

If the shaft in the shock spins around it is the gear that is broken. If the shaft doesn't move at all it is the shock. I think the shaft is supposed to move about 90 degrees. Check the other side to see how it is supposed to work. The gear has the stops on the bottom. I glued mine together with epoxy and it has held for over a year, of course, you need the broken parts. Also, you could go to a bone yard and get another gear and try to fix it, it is held on with a little pin. Good luck. :seeya

I'm having the same problem. So lets clarify the procedure for all including me. I remove the actuator, take hold of the little gear on top of the shock. If it moves 90 degrees or 180 degrees...it's okay? If it spins all the way around it's not?....and if the shock is okay then it has to be the actuator? I've seen the actuators selling for about $200 in various catalogs.

It's my drivers side rear shock malfuntioning...but all my shocks seem to be getting weaker and I'm planning on sending them in to Bilstein for rebuilding. I understand it's $80/shock to rebuild and they come back better than new. Do they fix the little gear on top while they're at it? (I suspect so).

Does anyone have the address for Bilstein? I seem to have misplaced it.

I solved the problem. Got hold of a rear actuator, Leads are shorter than the front. Spliced and soldered the leads from the "New" actuator,installed heat shrink, and now all is OK.
Called Bilstein, they only make actuators for "GM", which means you must buy from GM @ $450.00+, if you can find a dealer that will help you. :party:
