Thanks for sharing that. Seriously. It's a good reminder of precautions to take when doing this kind of work!

^indeed

I used a little paper mask, but the rubber band snapped and it didn't seal up to my face completely
I figured big deal, i'm wet sanding so there won't be much dust right? WRONG! It's now evening and i'm still coughing up aluminum dust, and when i blow my nose i get a silvery discharge. Tomorrow I will probably go see a doctor about this.

One thing for sure, I will not proceed any further before purchasing a proper painter's grade respirator that fits!

As it has been said earlier in this thread, if you get your suspension polished to this level, all it needs to maintain the finish is a wipe over when you wash the car and a hand buff every six months or so. Polishing actually makes it easier to keep these parts clean.

I did a similar job to ed's front suspension on my own car around two years ago and it still looks as good today as when I reassembled the front suspension.

3M makes some polishing wheels in medium and fine that fit in a die grinder. we used them at work to clean up aluminum. A friend with a '76 took a few home and used them to polish his SS exhaust system and it looked great. They should be available in bodyshop supply houses or places for industrial supplies (Grainger, etc)
