94 auto coupe: 142000 Miles, $7600 - Good or bad deal.
Hi.
I came across a 1994 metallic red automatic coupe that has 142000 miles on it. They want $7600 (I'm doing all this in US dollars) for it. It has new tires last spring and the I know the mileage was mainly highway, and the Mobil one has been religilously changed along the way.
I was looking for a '92 standard, but this one is newer and the price sounds good. Is this worth looking at or are the miles just too high for this car?
Whatcha think?

:D Maintenance/maintenance/maintenance! :reddevil
Besides changing oil, which is good thing, what other maintenance has been done regularly?
Hoses, belts, tuneups, coolant flushes, brake system...etc
Condition of exterior, interior, tires?
Everything work on the car?
If you can afford to be prepared to drop another 5 g's if needed, then it might be a good deal IMHO

Off the top of my head, go get a mechanic's opinion on the drivetrain. Check out all the little things (lights, switches, radio controls, et cetera) too. Add a couple of K-dollars for "tweaks" and it is still a good deal, probably. Lastly, get the present owner to get the engine up to operating temp, then HIT IT and see how it acts. If it behaves normally, it's probably a good risk. When it comes to the LT1, "bulletproof" comes to mind, with decent maintenance.

If the car has been well maintained, sounds like a good deal.
Also, I really like the metallic red. I don't see too many that color.

Keep in mind you may need to rebuild the tranny in the near future.
Personnally I would go for a stick. I've had trannies on two vehicles rebuilt and neither lasted that long. I'd rather have a new clutch over a rebuilt auto.
On price, seems like if you had two identical corvette's with 10k difference in mileage, the price difference should be 2k.
good luck

figure this, unless it has been done recently, a new opti and waterpump WILL be due.
Personally, I would hold out for the 6spd. You will be disappointed with the auto if you are a 6spd person.

if it's been taken care of and is in good shape right now, sure it's worth it!
Check the link in my sig to see what a 140,000 mile care can do when taken care of!

Just figure about 4 Gs for a new engine with options installed and you got about eleven-six. Still a damn good deal if you ask me....as long as everything else seems to be decent. Drive it first. If it needs a new tranny...that's another 2 or 3 gs.....Opti too. If it needs another one of those that's about 2 Gs with the water pump. LOL One wrong decision could run you upwards of about 16 grand. Ask if he had the opti-spark replaced recently.

as far as mileage goes i wouldnt really worry about it that much. my LT4 has that many miles and it runs a lot better than most vehicles i know with half the mileage. yes maintenance is a key factor here but im going to agree witht he fact you should hold out for a 6 speed! BTW like i said i am at about 140k miles and i am still on the origanal opti

Here in the PRC you can buy a 92 convrt with 89k for under 10k. http://www.autoshoppernetwork.com
I'd rather pay $9,500 for a 92 convrt with 89k. 142,000 miles is a lot miles.
Paying 2k more could save you a lot of money down the road.
If your handy with tools the mileage wont be a problem, but if you have to pay for repair work that could be a problem.
Interior repairs are pricey as is paint work.
Good luck with your search.

IMHO walk away, if for any reason it would be the fact that its an auto. Believe me, if you're the manual tranny kind, you'll soon be wishing you got one and be kicking yourself left & right. I'm a huge fan of the 6 speed, hey but thats not too obvious is it?

Thanks for all the comments so far, folks (do keep 'em coming if you want...)
I had an 85 auto, I had no problem with it, but I figured this time, go for a 6 speed 'cause "sports cars have standard transmissions", but since I've never had a 6 speed before, I'm not too worried about it. I had the 700 tranny rebuilt with a transgo last spring in the '85; it only cost me $1100 and the guy did a great job, so I'm not too worried about the extra expense of rebuilding the transmission. The opti spark worries me - though - I've heard plent y of horror stories on this web about them. I will ask if it's been touched.

My 96 has 143,000 now. If you get it, watch the waterpump. at the first sign of a leak, get it changes to a meizer pump. If hyou can keep the opti from getting wet, you will have no problems. Also plan on changing the plug wires a the same time. You have to loosen alternator bracket to get the wires through.
Don't be discouraged by the auto. I drive mine at 80 all the time. Jumps to 112 occasionally. When it is rebuild time, I will do it myself.
