California emissions - how bad does it hurt?

I'm looking at a few 88 - 89 convertibles. All of them have the California emissions. How much does that hurt performance and does this option make the car more expensive as far as parts are concerned?

My 87 vert is a CA car. The only comparison I have is my 85 non-CA car. Other than a couple of vacuum junctions, I don't see a big difference. From what I understand all of them have the dual pre-cats and AIR injection system into the big cat. The ignition, fuel, intake etc. seem the same as on a non-CA car and there are not seperate part numbers. I wouldn't worry about it. Perhaps it just needed to pass a slightly higher standard with the mostly the same equipment to earn the CARB stickers.

I am in the process of just removing it and keeping it in a box in case I move back to CA some day. Polution is a matter for tuning. A well tuned car will not polute.

Other than the fact that the CA cars were given an assembly line emissions tests, there are no differences in emissions equipment on the '88 or '89.

:iagree: Indeed the $100 charge for RPO NN5 is effectively just for the CA paperwork.

Plus we got a 5/50 emissions warranty which I guess makes the odds a little better that if something broke, it got fixed.
