Need advice on muffler elims
Time to replace the mufflers on my '92. Seems like muffler elims get a lot of positive responses. Exactly what do you tell the muffler shop to do or not to do. Are there any other considerations/pitfalls to avoid or any other parts needed. Thanks in advance.

You have several choices, some shops will not do it. What I did was got the kit from Mid America(although I recommend Corvette Central, they weld their tips on). Did it in my driveway. It's a simple do it yourself job. Kit runs about $150, I don't know what a shop would charge to cut off the muffs and bend some pipe to replace and cut your old tips off and reweld them on.

Just tell them to cut the mufflers off, and fabricate pipes in place, and get new tips or use the stock tips.
It cost me 400 bucks from midas, but my tips were 80 bucks each.

Some have the mufflers removed and have pipes welded in, $40-100.
Some buy the Eliminator kit ($119-199) and then install them. I highly recommend ditching the clamps and getting those pups WELDED.... for $30-50 at a muffler shop.
Either way you go, the sound is great.

My son Vetteweiser here on the forum, had Mieneke remove his tips, eliminate the mufflers and substitute pipes with the old tips attached. Looks original and sounds great. Price was under $100. :seeya

Go to the top of this page to "REVIEWS" and look at the member reviews for Muffler Elims.... Not very good stuff!
I got the ZR-1 Striaght Thru mufflers on mine, it has a kind, but gutsy Idle, no resonance to speak of. And a sub-obnoxious Roar at WOT!

My KBD straight throughs are totally shot so I pulled out the inserts and made them true eliminators. Well too darn loud but I like it. So the other day my rear y finally gave out so I ordered some replacement straight throughs from MAD. I was going to get the zr1s but since the taillights are round and not rectangular I thought I would follow the lines of the car. But eliminators are pretty loud for street use. I would avoid them or have an intercom system installed in your car. :steering:

Muffler elims = $1000 sound for < $200 :yesnod:
I bought Hooker resonator tips from Summit, $90 shipped and had the local Midas cut the mufflers off, fabricate pipes and weld my tips on $70
Minor resonance between 12-1400 rpm :auto:

I had my mufflers chopped off on my 95 and replace with straight pipe, cost me $90. The sound was pretty cool, you can easily set off car alarms. I ended up getting sick of them as the resonance was annoying for a daily driver, but if your car is a weekend car it might work out better.

Had them on my 89. A locally owned muffler shop cut out the rotted mufflers and welded in straight pipes with chrome tips for $75. No resonance and the sound was simply awesome. The key to reduce resonance is to have the tips stick out about 1/2 inch from the edge of the bumper. :auto:

I had the same done on my 96. I have stock tips which dont stick out at all, looks 100% stock, and NO resonance at all. Be warned, they are LOUD!

Only problem I see in the design of all stright thru mufflers is that there is no hole for water that gets in the pipes while washing to escape, thus reducing the life of the pipes!

I like the underhood sticker I saw on a street rod once: "If it's too loud, you're too old!" :reddevil :reddevil :reddevil

Re: Need advice on muffler elims (MYBLUEHEAVEN)
did a check at midas here for my 92. 75 bucks.they said i will get tickets tho,and no money back when i want muffs welded in.
they sell ravin mufflers. quoted me 400 bucks out the door for z33 series (strip/street)
165 apiece for the muffs.
so i went here http://www.seffects.com/catalog/manu...egory=Mufflers
and found the exact mufflers for 50 bucks each.
called em back and they want 75 bucks each to weld my own muffs in.
still cuts the cost in half even after freight.
but,as usual,im still procrastinating on it :lolg:

I have an 85 with flowmasters and you can throw the CD player. You'll never hear it. Down hill in 4th the sound is great. On the hiway in OD its all you hear. If you like LOUD you'll like the elims, if you want hear anything else you wont.
