Not sure about CA law..but In NC you can have all the niteox hookups, Turbos and superchargers you want ..but you CANNOT have a bottle containing Nitrous in it inside your vehicle....except at the track :D

Yes N2O is illegal to use in CA...but that doesn't stop anyone :reddevil
That's like telling someone the speed limit is 65mph on the freeway...but EVERYONE does 80mph.

superchargers- ford has put them in their cobras, so i dont think they are illegal
turbos- talk to porsche, subaru, and lotsa other companies about that
n20- not your friend if you are pulled over by a cop.

What if the tank if full, but not connected? Or what if it is connected but not full? Do they still take away your car?

I don't see why they would be illegal, as long as they are emission certified. Got a CARB number on them?

Well... I'm sure the law is different in different states and I'm not even sure what the law is (so why am I replying to this thread??  )
But I doubt Superchargers or Turbos are illegal. You would only be breaking the law if you were street racing with them or broke the speed limit with them... but it's not like you couldn't do that without them.
Nitrous on the other hand is a hazardous material... I think thats where they get you. I mean... trucks need special permits/licenses to hall hazmat, why should a car be exempt? I think if you set the car up for NOS with fittings and whatnot, your fine. If you then want to transport a full bottle with you to the track, you'd probably be ok too... But you'd better make sure it's obvious that the bottle isn't hooked up. Don't throw the bottle in your hatch if the thats where the hookup is... keep it on the passenger side floor or something... I would think you could get out of it if that were the case and you were pulled over... showing that the bottle wasn't hooked up and saying you were on your way to the track or whatever...
Superchargers, Turbos and NOS are all power builders. But just because they are power builders doens;t make them illegal. You could build a N/A motor that could out run a lot of blown motors on the street... it's all relative... It's gotta have something to do with the hazmat regs in my opinion....

You can always move. Don't blame the CHP.. They don't make the laws, the State Of California does. :cry

I believe anything that modifies the emissions system, and anything intake relataed would, is illegal unless certified by the manufacturer to comply in a specific installation - specific car/engine combination.

Just called the Minnesota DOT and asked about transporting nitrous and they told me that as long as I'm not transporting the containers for commerce reasons then the regulations do not apply to me. However, EPA rules would still apply, but I doubt that they could prove that I was using it.

To bad you live in California.
State laws differ from state to state.
In Illinois there are no laws even mentioning nitrous on the books.
I've asked state troopers, chief of police, etc. They all concur.
The police can't do a damn thing about it here in Illinois.
So I run with around with a BIG BLUE bottle in my back hatch area.
Check your own state laws before jumping to conclusions.
Nitrous in and of itself is not flammable, it's more of a catalyst.
Too bad about California, good luck to everyone else.

I thought that you could have N20 in your car as long as the bottles weren't open (as in push the button and GO). And if you have a car like a Vette, and you get pulled over, the cop may be able to see you close the valve on the tank. I think this is right for NY, maybe not, please correct me if I'm wrong.

Hey, if you have a remote Bottle Opener, then I dont think they can catch you closing the valve, besides MY rear glass is so dark that even standing close to it, you wont be able to see whats inside. :D

Dont be mad at the cops, be mad at the tree hugging liberals that made it illegal to do just about anything to your car in California, and the idiots that vote for them. Carb stamp my butt.
